We were lucky to catch up with Calvert Miles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Calvert , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful Project that I’ve been a part of is my second film Yasuke Descendents. It took four years to make. I’ve always been the type to always create a job for myself. When I came across an article about an African samurai, I knew I had to make this film. I know that Hollywood wouldn’t make this film so I had to do it. I created the first live action story about Yaskue the African samurai. I premiered it at the Chinese theater on my birthday to a packed audience.
Calvert , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I moved from Chicago Illinois to Los Angeles, California in October 2014. I met Kim Do who taught me the martial art of fighting for the camera which I dubbed Film Combat. From there I took a liking to Stunts and been doing it ever since. I was fortunate enough to train with Chad Stahelski the director of the John Wick films. He taught me how to teach and develop a fight scene for any actor that wants to be in action movies. Since then I have created my production company 3 Strands Of Rope Productions, and my martial art school, Final Conflict Karate where I teach Film Combat.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing your finished project in real life. Knowing that something physical can manifest itself from your thoughts. That is a great feeling to have knowing that you can literally create something from your mind.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Definitely finishing Yasuke Descendents. I self funded the entire film through the pandemic. Scheduling actors for film days. Also editing the film and going to get it ready to be shown in theaters. Finishing this project made me Master the skills to produce a film from concept to premiere night.
