We were lucky to catch up with Callum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Callum, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since I was a child! I started falling in love with music as a child, I started with humming along to songs from the crib which turned into singing pretty quickly. I was born with synesthesia so music has always been a intrinsic part of me that has always came naturally. Growing up I would always bug my Mom telling her to find me a band, as if that’s how it works. But I worked a few jobs in my early teen years that I felt took a lot of time away from my true passion, Music, leading me to make the decision to become a full time musician and I’ve been playing professionally since 14 years old ever since.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a 17 year old Singer-Songwriter born in Baltimore, MD but raised on The Eastern Shore. I first got into music because it was what helped me cope with everything I was going through in my life. Sometimes it’s hard to explain what you’re going through but I would listen to songs that embodied the situations and feelings that I was experiencing. I then took that appreciation and turned it towards my life experiences and wanted to convey my life to others through music in hopes that it would do for them what music does for me. With songs like “I Don’t Need You” I sing about coming to a realization that you are better off separating your self from toxic relationships. My song “Champagne” I sing about what people go through with addiction. We’ve all been through a lot of unique situations but there is commonality in all of our lives so I try to bring people together with my music.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I touched on life experiences that are hard to explain to others. A big one for me is being adopted, which turned out to be positive being that I was brought into a family that is full of love and that loves and appreciates me as well. But the negative is that my Sister who was also adopted didn’t land in as good of a situation as I did, which leads to a lot of conflicting feelings as you can imagine. I have experienced a lot of trying situations such as these but I like to think I’ve handled most of these with grace and maturity.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I always like seeing people happy or making them feel so, it’s a natural thing in society that we want everyone to feel accepted and comfortable. I also agree that everyone has rights and should be able to live their life as they please. But my want to see people happy would lead me to do things that were detrimental to my mental health and wellbeing which made me realize that there is limits to everything. While I do my part to be a light and make the world a better place I have to be conscious of what I choose to be a part of and subscribe to and what I do not because I learned a new lesson, “Stand for something or fall for anything”, and I won’t be falling to just to make someone happy.
