Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Callie Lawrence. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Callie, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
One of my main passions in life has always been animals. I am an affiliate photographer for a nonprofit called “The Tilly Project”, which connects local photographers to pet owners seeking end of life pet photography. I personally offer these services at half cost, because I am a firm believer that all pets are worthy of being captured. Everyone deserves the opportunity to remember their four legged companions, every little detail: the fuzzy paws, wet nose, crooked teeth, swirls and whorls of fur. This project has been very emotional to be a part of, but I couldn’t be more honored.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi everyone, I’m Callie, the photographer behind Callie Alexandria Photography. I’m your metro detroit and beyond adventure photographer! My style is earthy and cinematic, and I specialize in elopements, couples, equine and pet photography.
My photography journey started during the COVID-19 pandemic when I found myself at home more often than I was used to. My partner had a practically new beginner DSLR camera and I asked if I could take photos of my pets for fun with my extra time. I fell in love. Once I started posting the photos online, my friends started asking me to take photos for them too. I took that passion and ran with it. I watched SO many YouTube videos, eager to learn as much as possible about the craft I was falling in love with.
I intend to be a source of comfort for my clients during sessions, as not everyone is super comfortable being in front of the camera (myself included)! I’m as hands on or hands off as my clients want me to be before and during our sessions. I will help plan out outfits, coordinate permits, scout locations and more. I’m incredibly proud of creating a brand that is genuine and authentic to who I am as a person and as a photographer. That authenticity shines in the images that I deliver to clients. You won’t find uncomfortable poses and f*ke smiles in the galleries I deliver, only REAL, genuine emotion.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, knowing that the memories I’m capturing will literally outlive me is the most rewarding aspect of being a creative. Particularly when I’m capturing weddings, I always like to take an abundance of photos of interactions with grandparents. As a grandma’s girl myself, I wish I had gotten more photos with my grandma than I have. You never know how long you have with those you love. Time is such a gift. I’m honored to capture these memories to remember for a lifetime.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I could go back in time and tell myself not to be afraid of talking to other photographers! When I first started in this industry, I really thought it was a dog eat dog world. I was TERRIFIED to go to my first content day. Little did I know that I would meet some of my greatest friends in the industry while attending these collaborative sessions.
