We were lucky to catch up with Callie Lance recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Callie, thanks for joining us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The biggest risk I have taken is moving to a city and building a business from scratch without having a local support networking. This is what really pushed me to know who I am as a person and develop a high work ethic, passion, and push myself to be an extrovert. Being willing to face my fears, to challenge myself, and step outside of my comfort zones without a back up plan was the ultimate self trust exercise. Thankfully, it is still paying off and I am able to do what I love to do every day. My patients hold me accountable to always be pushing myself more and more to be learning, challenging myself, and educating others. I am so grateful I took the risk of moving to Chattanooga, TN and opening up Chattanooga Sports Chiropractic Institute to build the pathway of my dreams.
Callie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally from Medina, Ohio and always an athlete, Dr. Callie’s dream was to be a Doctor and own her own practice. After exploring veterinary medicine and physical therapy, life directed me into chiropractic profession, specifically sports chiropractic. Graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelors of Science-Health Sciences followed by graduating with a Masters of Sports Science and Rehabilitation and Doctorate of Chiropractic from Logan University in Chesterfield, MO. Then achieved her Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician from the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. Now she is the owner and solo practitioner of Chattanooga Sports Chiropractic Institute in Chattanooga, TN. Specializing in treatment of endurance athletes, she loves to bring the knowledge to the general population to empower their athlete within. She offers a wide variety of treatments including full spine and extremity chiropractic manipulations, dry needling with electric stimulation, cupping, active release technique, instrument assisted soft tissue mobilizations, trigger point therapy, dynamic neuromuscular stabilization rehabilitation, Mckenzie exercises, strength and conditioning coaching, lifestyle coaching, and kinesiology taping. Dr. Callie serves as the Tennessee State Delegate for the American Chiropractic Association and the official chiropractor for the Chattanooga Lookouts- AA affiliate for the Cincinnati Reds, and active member of the Chattanooga Chamber and Tennessee Chiropractic Associations. She was awarded the 2023 Rising Chiropractor of the Year by the Tennessee Chiropractic Association. Dr. Callie is a 2021 graduate of Leadership Chattanooga. She was featured in “Landing the Leap” and “Going the Distance” articles in CityScope Magazine. She has successfully completed 6 half Ironmans, 1 full Ironman, a 55k ultramarathon, and a 10 mile open water swim in the Tennessee River called Swim the Suck. She is an ambassador for Addie Ray Racing which helps differently abled kids complete races and triathlons. Chattanooga Sports Chiropractic Institute presents the annual Furry Scurry Fun run where humans and their furry friends take on a mile or a 5k fun run/walk to encourage positive movement in the outdoors while raising money for the McKamey Animal Shelter.
The state of mind an athlete possesses is a powerful weapon that empowers them to continue to challenge their bodies, physically and mentally, to achieve new limits. This goes hand in hand with chiropractic care as the accountability to do the self work to improve their health and wellness. Dr. Callie loves to be a part of this process and helping others learn how to tap into this human power to be the best version of their self. The human mind, body, and spirit are resilient and she loves to help patients along this journey that is more than injury rehabilitation and prevention.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
There are a hand of skills that are helpful in being successful in the healthcare industry, but listening skills and empathy are two of the major factors. There is a whole soap box to step on about the standards of human interaction in today’s society and social media era but truly taking the time to listen to someone’s complaints is impactful. Building a relationship with a patient to allow for a safe, secure place to be vulnerable in a world that is very angry and judgmental is a must. Allowing time to make the person feel like a human and not another number in the world that is numbers oriented can be life changing. Dr. Callie loves to learn about the patient as a whole, not just their complaint or injury. What are your goals besides getting out of pain? What will truly make an impactful change in your life to achieve? How can we as a team empower you to find the best version of yourself rather than just focusing on the pain?
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I am a huge believer in if you are going to talk the talk, then you better be walking the walk. Experimenting on myself for different stretches, exercises, and treatments allows for better explanations and relatability. Being able to describe the discomfort and when to push into that pain or to stop activity is one of the biggest lessons to teach. No pain, no gain is not always the applicable choice, but instead describing the difference between good pain and bad pain. Taking the time to educate the patient on their injury, treatment options, ways to decrease incidence of reoccurrence, and answering their questions is key to continue to build Chattanooga Sports Chiropractic Institute. Another reputation builder is being honest about my own journey within health and fitness. I am not perfect at doing everything I should be doing but it makes relating to patients easier. I also like to think it empowers the patient to know, well if she can do that, then I most certainly can too. Making sure to cheer on my community to achieve their goals that they didn’t think was possible is one of my favorite job perks!
