We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Calli Loskill a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Calli, appreciate you joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
It’s my mission to help my clients feel like masterpieces, I want to create tattoos that are considerate of the body they are transforming. I find so much inspiration in nature and the human condition. I love to create flash and tattoo designs that speak to human thoughts, feelings, circumstances and relationships using nature motifs and symbolism. I also love creating unique, ornamental, free-hand floral tattoos complimenting the body and emphasizing my client’s own individual nature. I provide tattoo services as well as commissioned art, such as portraits and landscapes. I believe art and tattoos are a beautiful part of human nature and naming my studio Human Nature Art and Tattoo felt right and natural.

Calli, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Proudly, Human Nature Art and Tattoo is the first woman-owned tattoo studio in Jefferson City, Missouri. I’m also the first woman tattoo artist licensed in Jefferson City. I got into tattooing by following my love for art and people. It led me to owning my own business which further develops my interpersonal skills, allows me to work directly with clients and develop policies that I believe are best for my business and art. I focus on tattooing my original, nature-inspired flash series and ornamental free-hand florals. My flash series are sets of original, ready-to-tattoo, drawings that explore combinations of human and nature elements inspired by the similarities between nature and the human condition. My free-hand florals are botanical designs drawn directly on the body to create ornamental tattoos unique to individual body composition. I also offer nature realism, cover-ups and cosmetic tattoo services. In addition to tattooing I accept a limited amount of art commissions, such as portraits or landscapes in charcoal, chalk pastel, watercolor, or oil. I communicate and connect with my clients to understand the best solution or approach to accomplish creative pursuits and I invest in the long term wellbeing of my clients and their tattoos or commissioned art by offering a lifetime guarantee. I take the most pride and care in providing a creative and comfortable experience that gives my clients confidence. I appreciate and respect my clients’ trust. I hope to reflect and share my love for nature and consideration of the human condition through art and tattooing.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I think becoming a tattoo artist and business owner requires many acts of resilience. Becoming an apprentice meant wanting, waiting and working without a guarantee of success for many years. Once licensed there was no guarantee of continuing success. Tattooing is consistently learning, every experience is valuable and varies with each client, having resilience is the key to successful communication and problem solving. A client recently asked me to tattoo a complex cover-up over a traumatic existing tattoo within a budget. I agreed and after countless drafts still couldn’t draw a design covering the existing tattoo to my standards and meeting the client’s budget. Instead, I found the best solution I could regardless of the cost so I could illustrate the full potential. It took resilience to communicate with the client and to persevere until I found a way to make the existing tattoo disappear. Fortunately, this client understood and we were able to come to an agreement. As a business owner coming to an agreement with a client isn’t always possible and it takes resilience to maintain positive relationships and experiences in difficult situations.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think my attention to the overall the experience before, during and after the tattoo or commissioned art helps to build my reputation as someone caring and positive to work with. I’m grateful for personal referrals from clients because I love the opportunity to provide more quality service and build a respected reputation. I also believe dedication to developing a personal style and business model helps because reputation is a reflection of character.
