We were lucky to catch up with Caleb Silvers recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caleb, appreciate you joining us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
When I said I was pursuing acting people thought I was joking. I wasn’t taken seriously. My mom was really the only one who believed in me. My dad told me to stop wasting my time and find a real job. I remember the day I finally got a lead role and then the movie showed in theaters. After the movie was over my dad came up to me and said he was proud of me. People started taking me more seriously.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in the small town of Owosso, Michigan. I knew I had to go the extra mile to get somewhere. Growing up, I have always had a passion for film and acting. As a kid I performed in a few plays. As a teen I started making YouTube videos and vines. When I was 17 years old I met a celebrity who changed my life. I asked him how I could get into acting and he said “I’m not going to hand it to you, but I will guide you”. I was told to go try out for student films at Motion Pictures Institute. I tried out for student films and didn’t get call backs the first few times. I wasn’t discouraged and kept pushing. I tried out for “Batman v Superman” and landed my very first role as a Military Officer. After that the opportunities started rolling in. When I turned 23 I decided to take a break from acting and join the military with my close friend. At the age of 25 I resumed my acting career and continued to serve as a reservist in the Army. I’ve now been in over 50 projects including movies, TV series, music videos, and commercials. I have also directed and produced a few movies. I have received a Telly Award for a recent Hallmark film I had a role in and was also assistant director and Co-Producer in that film. I’d say the biggest challenge as an actor is trying to stay consistent and scheduling projects that may collide with other life commitments. You must stay dedicated and have a big passion if you want to make it in the film world. I happen to have the drive to make it work. I’ve heard plenty of people who said they could never do this. That is what sets me apart from others. There are days that I went to a movie set straight from my regular job and then back to my regular job after I was finished on set.
I’m at a good point in my career where the opportunities come to me and I don’t have to look as hard as I used to.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I’d say the most rewarding aspect is seeing the final product and seeing my work come to life. I love seeing people’s reactions and knowing it impacted their life as well. I also love spreading my knowledge and encouraging others with the same passion to keep on pushing. I was once that kid with a dream. Now my dream is coming true.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. My goal is to keep going until I’m on every TV screen and in every theater. I want to make an impact on the world and will never give up on that. I hope that I can be an inspiration to many and show them that hard work really does pay off.
