We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Caleb Reid a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Caleb, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
The life changing risk that I took was beginning to believe in myself. Having tunnel vision and remaining persistent played a gigantic role! It was not always like this though. My entire childhood I struggled with socialization and self-esteem. Those 2 things alone caused a deep internal battle furthermore, which made it difficult for me to trust myself and my abilities. When i picked up a film camera this all changed. I couldn’t see what I was shooting until i got the pictures developed. Which caused me to have to trust that I was capable of bringing my wildest imaginations to life. From the age of 16 until now at the age of 19 I took pictures, now I make clothes….
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into content creation at the age of 13! I was making dance videos with my brother Martez in school and outside of school consistently. I’d source the song then he would find the location, we’d style each other, he’d edit the video and I would promote it across all platforms vigorously in an attempt to go viral. Through those experiences, I learned the importance of being resourceful and multi-dimensional. at a young age. When I was 16 I picked up a camera and I haven’t looked back ever since. As of this moment my only focus is to tell a story of where i’m from and what i been through in an artistic form.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
YES! I recently started [TBTS] better known as THY BROTHER THY SISTER. The mission of [TBTS] is to conjoin community outreach via art and lifestyle. Providing connection means more to me then aimlessly posting content without an identified purpose. I want to shine light on the city of Charleston. We often overlook our own talent and purpose down here and I feel like for us to grow as a city that has to change. I aim to empower culture though education and action.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I’d definitely say basketball players. Allen Iverson’s tenacity and confidence really has impacted me. A lot of times as creatives we think we need to do what’s working for others and implement those actions within our own process and I feel that’s not the right way to go about it. Just be yourself and It’ll all work out for you. When we talk about players like Iverson, his belief in his self couldn’t be taken away no matter the situation. That alone truly inspires me. to keep finding myself everyday I wake up.
