Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caleb Owolabi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Caleb, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Do you have any thoughts about how to create a more inclusive workplace?
“Trying to create an inclusive workspace is not easy. When working with the best of the best that the media world has to offer. Yet still I try to create an inclusive workspace by inviting interns to come on set and watch me work”
Caleb, a T.V. & Media Producer based in Asheville, North Carolina says that engaging diverse talent at a young age can prepare them to apply for technical-specific roles in T.V. and film later on. Caleb employs an “open set” concept which allows students of various backgrounds or socio-economic status to engage with the director and be exposed to quality production, early.
Caleb, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In Caleb’s 4th year of college he was recruited to work on an HBO pilot as a production assistant. From then on, he has relished in the field of T.V. and film bringing new and fresh ideas to screen from people in his own backyard (Asheville, NC). “If it is a good story and I can see it helping the community, then I am getting on the phone that very second with my investors to get the production budget greenlit”. Now, at 29 years of age, Caleb, a business management grad with a minor in accounting jovially states “it’s been 8 years since converting to the show business industry, and I honestly love every minute of it! I honestly can’t see myself doing anything else”
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I think NFTs are seriously the new wave! I interviewed a couple in Asheville that were really big into it. I’ve also done my fair share of investing in the newest craze!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
During the 2020 pandemic– I did not know how I would sustain my production company because we could not get close enough to people to film them. We also had too many production staff enclosed on a set to continue certain Productions that were in the works. With that being the case, I literally had to sit in my house and meditate on how I could still bring a show to people. So we started editing virtual meetings and Skype calls together as events for companies who wanted to meet together, but couldn’t. This helped us get through the year and gave us a really great rapport with the companies we were doing business with.
The face to face on Skype and Zoom really helped employees of various industries make it through lockdown and a contactless environment.
