We recently connected with Caleb Henry and have shared our conversation below.
Caleb, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The core foundation of Scaler Content and Vow & Tie has and always be one thing, creativity. That being said, how co-founder Ryan Moline and I came up with the names for both companies was not as “creative” as some might imagine.
As we were sitting in Ryan’s apartment trying to brainstorm company names we resulted to what was in front of us. Our pet red tailed boa constrictor, Savannah, and our ball python Daphne. Ryan and I, each holding one, looked at each other and one of us, I can’t remember who, just blurted “snakes have scales what about scaler?!” And thus Scaler was born. Since then it’s come to represent helping new brands, companies and organizations scale up their business, but it all started with scales!
Vow and Tie Weddings was somewhat similar to where we were once again at Ryan’s apartment, brainstorming and snake holding, when we just started to name things involved in the big day. “Tuxedos, rings, dresses, vows…. wait, you say vows…. you tie the knot…” and that’s when Vow and Tie came to mind and our slogan became “say the vows, tie the knot.” And that’s been a really fun and creative outlet for us to be able to capture couple’s biggest day and deliver them a wedding film they’ll never forget. I was actually Ryan’s best man in his wedding but that’s a story for another time!
Caleb, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Ryan and I grew up together, were home schooled together and still to this day play in a band called Caleb Henry and The Customs together, so after over 20 years of friendship together nobody was really that surprised when we started these ventures together.
As mentioned before our goal is purely and simply one word, creativity. With Scaler we get the opportunity to offer years of experience in cinematography, marketing, branding, social media management, photography, production etc. to any size business, but our heart is to work with businesses, brands, and organizations that really want a creative edge over their competitors, and fresh content that will help them scale up. Scaler has brought us opportunities to work directly with musicians, alcohol brands, food vendors, festivals, construction companies and more. It’s been really fulfilling to us and we’ve been able to drive sales and bring growth to other businesses as well, which is great for them!
Vow and Tie has been another great creative outlet for us. Being able to capture a couples biggest day is so much fun and instead of focusing on more short-form content like we do (on average) with Scaler, we get to create longer-form films for our clients. What we love most about filming weddings is that we approach every one from a different angle. Once we get to know the couple we get the opportunity to craft a narrative that’s specific and special to them. Then after the day is done we get to sit in front of a computer and stitch clips together with music, sound effects, an endless amount of color creativity to deliver them something they can watch over and over for a lifetime. That’s why we always say “we don’t make wedding videos, we make wedding films,” some of which actually end up meeting the right length to be considered short films!
How’d you meet your business partner?
So kind of how I mentioned before, Ryan and I have known each other for over 20 years. We actually met as kids at House to Home Community Church, which is a small house church my parents co-pastor. After that we got involved in the same home school group and were pretty much inseparable since then. In our later teens we started a punk rock and ska band with some friends, and eventually moved into the current band we’re in which I mentioned before.
We really have always done everything together and have even given each other tattoos. It’s a real strength in my opinion since often times we don’t even need to ask each other questions because we already know what the other person is thinking, and it makes it easy for us to pivot in new directions.
People always so don’t go into business with friends, but we would tend to disagree with that.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
When it comes to maintaining morale, I really think it’s sharing the highs AND the lows together. We’re able to say “this sucks man,” and share the pain of 15 hour edit days or 12 hour shoot days. At the same time, since we work on most projects together we always share the highs and it helps us remember why we’re doing this. It’s not just to be able to help brands scale or give couples their dream wedding film, but it’s also so we don’t have to answer to anybody. We get to be our own bosses and that gives us the ability to do what we want to do and take the clients we want to take. It’s ultimately about creativity and freedom for us.
