We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caleb Copeland. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caleb below.
Alright, Caleb thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
For me scaling all comes down to one thing in this modern business age, communication. Most people are terrible at it. We answer our phone, reply to emails, respond to DM’s religiously. You will never have to wait on us and you know you can count on us. No one else does that.
Another key to our success has been letting your people do what they are good at and what they enjoy. Don’t put a square peg in a round hole. Give them freedom and autonomy as much as you can. We don’t have office hours or vacation days. As long as your work gets done I don’t care when you are or are not at the office.
The last things is you have to create an environment that people want to be a part of. Allows personal freedoms, allow people to be creative; have the space to do that and encourage their creativity and spirit. Make an office that people want to come to. It costs money but it pays dividends.
Caleb, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up hunting and playing baseball. I wanted to do something for a career that involved one of those things. It turns out that was hunting. I also always loved stories so I wanted to tell outdoor stories. Years ago I had an idea for a show and I pitched it to a big name in this business and the idea got me a job. I’ve been doing outdoor content creation and storytelling ever since.
I am most proud of the Rolodex of friends and clients I have been fortunate enough to get to know and work with for all these years. The people I have gotten to meet, the clients I have gotten to work with and the places I have gotten to go is more than I could have ever dreamed. I have to catch myself a lot and try and slow down to appreciate it. We have gotten to do some top of the mountain stuff in a very small and hard industry to grow in.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I make sure anyone I meet in business know that if they cannot get a hold of me something is wrong. Communication is everything. Answer you phone, make sure your clients know they can count on you in a world of people they can’t count on.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
Give them as much freedom as you possibly can. Do not put people in a box. Micromanaging kills. Give them a reason to buy into a project or an idea and then give them the tools for them to take ownership of it. Incentive them with more than a pizza party twice a year. Take them to lunch, buy them things they need, bonuses, pay raises and of course make sure they know how valuable they are. The good ones will really appreciate it, the entitled ones needs to leave.
