We were lucky to catch up with Caleb Bogenschutz recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caleb, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
YouTube has been my most valuable resource for learning how to build furniture and cabinetry. It’s truly amazing what information you can get and all of the skills you can learn from it. I’m not sure I would have had the level of success I’ve had if not for YouTube.
While the vast array of information on YouTube is a blessing, it can also be a curse. It can be difficult to filter through the advice and techniques that might not be best practices. I have since learned to identify issues with certain techniques and that’s something I wish I would have been better at in the past.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started this business mostly as a hobby to fill some time after work at my day job. I’ve always had an interest in woodworking and took wood shop classes in school, which I really enjoyed. I started out making smaller decor items with the intention of reinvesting any money I made into machinery and tools so that I could one day build larger furniture items. I now specialize in dining tables, beds, and custom cabinetry and have pieces all over the state of Texas.
The main problem I solve for my clients revolves around them not being able to find exactly what they want online or in furniture stores. They make like certain things about these items, but there are often certain things that they wanted changed to fit their needs. This is where custom furniture and cabinetry comes in.. I personally meet with my clients to get a feel for what their needs are and create a 3D design on the computer based on this information. I truly think that allowing my clients to view their piece in a 3D model before its built is a game-changer. It often removes any uncertainty that might otherwise be there.

Have you ever had to pivot?
One example of this actually occurred earlier this year. I ran this business out of my garage for around 4 years. During this time, I made some very large projects that were very challenging to complete due to my limited space. While I made the best of the space while I was working there, I knew I eventually needed a change. Earlier this year, I moved into a commercial shop space that is five times the size of my previous space. This larger space has allowed me to both take on larger projects as well as take on multiple projects at once. I’ve only been in the new shop space for a few months, but it has been a wonderful decision.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I don’t have the largest social media following, but I’ve learned a lot about growing on social media from those with pretty large followings. I think the most important thing is consistency. If you’re only posting once every few days, growth is going to be pretty hard to come by. The algorithms on each of these social media sites tend to reward users that are posting on a daily basis. Users that post frequently are typically shown to a much larger audience, which greatly increases the ability for you to grow.
