We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cale Charney. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cale below.
Cale, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and process.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you tell us a little about what you do? Maybe what you having coming up?
Well, first and foremost, I’m a songwriter. I think I’ve been blessed with a pretty good voice so a big part of what I do is playing live shows. Most of them are just me, my acoustic guitar, and the microphone. There’s really nothing like showing up to a place you’ve never been and playing in front of people you’ve never met. It used to scare me but now it thrills me. And I mean that genuinely. It’s good to have some nervous energy but I really do feel at home on stage. Also, the recording process and marketing side of music are very important. I don’t necessarily feel as ‘at home’ with those aspects so I try to put myself in a position to work with people I trust and respect. This past year has been one of expansion for me as I’ve worked with more people who have helped take certain tasks off my plate and provide more opportunities. The next step is to expand my reach and create merchandise to have available at my shows. I’m also excited to be releasing some new music very soon.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
There’s two things. One is just the simple creation from nothing to something. You know, I wrote a song on Tuesday. On Monday, that thing didn’t exist. That’s pretty cool to me.
The second one is when you perform that song, whether live or on record, and someone tells you that they relate to it or it moves them in some way. That makes me feel like I’m filling a cup other than my own. It’s a proud feeling.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Last year I released my debut album. It’s called Find a Way. The title track, and the album as a whole, sort of illustrates my resilience. “When your blue skies vanish into grey, you’ll find a way” is a line in the song that I think really speaks to where I was as a young man and where the world was with the pandemic. We were all finding our way. Getting that album completed and released took a lot of time and patience. There were a ton of hurdles to overcome. We started recording it in Florida in early 2020 before the pandemic hit. Then it was put on pause as was everything, everywhere. I felt like I couldn’t win. I was finally recording my first album and now I had to put it in my pocket for an undetermined amount of time. But we ended up recording the rest of it up in Pennsylvania and by July 2021, it was released. I remember I was driving back from a gig in Knoxville, Tennessee and the clock hit midnight on July 9, 2021 and I went to Spotify and just listened to it for the first time in my car. I got home before it was done and I just sat there listening until it was finished. I was sitting there thinking about when I bought that first guitar on Craigslist. I was thinking about all the ups and downs that led me to writing that specific batch of songs. It was sort of emotional. Looking back, I’m grateful for that whole experience.
