We recently connected with Calder Campbell and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Calder thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Too many stories to tell! It used really to get under my skin. I think because I felt like my identity was wrapped up in what I do. I was very sensitive to any sort of judgement about my work but I really try to not let it affect me anymore. I think that’s one of the biggest things I’ve worked on personally and professionally, to let things just roll off.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am an artist specializing in drawing with a style that is flowing and impressionistic. I take a large amount of inspiration from food and drink- an industry that I was deeply steeped in for over a decade. My work involves limited-edition prints and products as well as large-scale murals and client work (creative brand development etc.). I like to create images that are playful and have an uninhibited, sketchbook quality.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
To detach from reality a bit. My work serves as an escape, and I hope it can provide the same for others. Creating work that offers a bit of play.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
My career (and life) will never be linear. Set goals and aim high but be open to other possibilities. Go with the flow. Early on in my life, I thought I had to plan every step of the way out. Things rarely work out the way you expect and you can learn to enjoy that.
