Calandra, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?

Joi is part of my middle name. Hair & body butter is self explanatory lol.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

My name is Calandra & I am the CEO of Joi’s Hair and Body Butter & Joi Beard Gang. I make & create. I make & create products for your skin & hair. I started this business in 2017 when I couldn’t find a product to keep my hair hydrated so I created my own. The plan was to make it & have my stylist to use it on my hair. I had no plans on selling/making this a business. She liked it so much that she used it on her other clients & they liked it & asked if I could make them some. That’s when Joi’s Hair and Body Butter was born. My plan was to make this 1 product that was going to be for everybody. Well my vision & the Lord’s vision was not on the same page. Joi’s Hair and Body Butter now have over 10 products. I now have along with the hair & body butter, hair growth oil, hair growth cream, eczema cream, 3 scented body butters, beard oil, fat burning oil, scalp stimulator. My favorite Xtra Thirsty for those whose hair drink up everything you put on it. Miracle Luv which was created for a friend who had cancer & couldn’t find anything to keep her hands & feet hydrated. I also have 4 different types of wooden combs. What I am most proud of about Joi’s products are when my customers tell me how much the product have changed their life, their words, not mine. That let’s me know the product did what it was created to do. The boosting of the self esteem reviews are what really touches my soul. When you have a customer hug you crying saying that your product have cleared up their skin & they are no longer embarrassed. They have tried everything & nothing worked. THAT is an unexplainable feeling & what I’m very proud of. What I would like future customers to know about Joi’s Hair and Body Butter? I keep in touch with my customers in different ways via social media, email, or they call or text me.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?

I have been funding this business out of pocket. No business loans, investors, rich parents, nothing. So any money I make from the business goes right back into the business.
