We were lucky to catch up with Caity Babs recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Caity thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
In high-school I was so hard on myself. I constantly looked for others approval and never thought I was smart enough to do something really big. I took the easy way out and went for the only thing I thought I was good at, “Hair Dresser? Sure, let’s try it”. I went to school, worked in a salon and realized this was not the career I wanted for the rest of my life, but what other talents did I have?
I always knew I had a strong passion & love for music, I just wasn’t sure what part I had in it. I have Much Music (the MTV of Canada) to thank for steering me in the right direction. When I was 18 years old they held a VJ Search, and I knew I had to try out. I started creating videos and entering the contest and ended up making it to the Top 10 in Canada. I was finally creating and working for something I truly loved and enjoyed. Of course it was going to be a long tough journey to end up where I am today, and there were plenty of times I wanted to give up and quit. I stuck with it, took any job I could and worked for free for MANNYY years. I wouldn’t change a thing because look at where I ended up.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My career really started when I got my job at SiriusXM. I am a Host at Octane & Turbo which are for the heavy metal lovers out there. Besides being on air 7 days a week, I also get to go to concerts and festivals and interview some of the biggest artists in the game. Truly is a dream job.
On top of SiriusXM, I am also one of three hosts on The Power Hour TV Show on AXS TV. Alongside Josh Bernstein and Matt Pinfield we talk about the latest music news, interview artists, create one of a kind skits, and premiere new music videos. This is a project we love creating and we hope to bring many more seasons to the interwebs!
In early October I am expecting my first child. Exciting, YES! My husband and I have always wanted to start a family and truly I am very excited for my little one to experience life at its fullest with music all around. I have a home studio, so really I have quite the ideal set up for all the life changes about to happen. I hope people know that just because a child comes into your world, doesn’t mean everything has to change. Sure you’re making sacrifices, but why not have your child be a part of it rather than giving it up? Best believe I will still be working after my maternity leave is up, and you can expect to see Caity Babs & Family at a handful of Festivals and Concerts in the years to come.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
Many people think I have it easy and got to where I am today without struggle. That couldn’t be further from the truth. At one point in life while I was an unpaid intern at MTV Canada, and working as much as I could on the side I actually had to steal lunch meat because I could not afford food. Not my proudest moment, but I hope sharing my struggles helps others.
I worked for years on my own creating videos, interviewing whoever I could, and applying for jobs everywhere. It took over 10 years for me to get a paid job in the industry I love. I could not be more grateful for the people who have taken part in that.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Daily on both of my SiriusXM shows I give out the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number (988). I do this because I myself have struggled with mental health and I think it is so important to be vocal and get the word out. I hope to help many people in understanding that they are not alone. The most rewarding thing is having fans/people/artists reach out to me telling me how I have impacted them and helped them reach out for help. There is nothing more rewarding then being at a Festival or concert and having someone come up to you and tell you their story. I have been brought to tears by many wonderful Metal Heads and those are absolutely some of my proudest moments. To know I am helping others and spreading the word everyday is a feeling I live for.
