We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caitlin Wise. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caitlin below.
Caitlin , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
I spent most of my career as an event planner for different companies and non-profits, and after becoming familiar with the industry, I knew I wanted to pivot to a more creative role that still involved events. I did research into the Kansas City market, and thought there may be an opportunity for unique event rentals, backdrops, and installations. Once I decided to start my own business, I started small with an Etsy shop and some digital products I created – this gave me the opportunity to learn more about design and business planning at a fairly low cost to entry. I worked on that for a few months before I ventured into the larger pieces and rental items. I still have my Etsy shop, but it’s a much smaller focus now in my overall portfolio.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
After years in the events industry, I realized I was the most fulfilled after creating custom event experiences for my friends and family. From birthdays to baby showers to watch parties, I love coming up with unique themes and “moments” during events that feel especially personal to each guest. I knew I wanted to create that experience for others, and designwise KC was born.
I love connecting with clients to hear about their vision for each event – I think all events have an opportunity to be a memorable experience for the attendees. I ask about the vision, theme, and purpose of the event, and then put together a mood board and design proposal for every inquiry interested in moving forward.
No matter the client or event, designwise KC wants every event to feel 100% custom and personal for its guests.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Consistency is key! And that looks different to everyone. It’s really easy to feel discouraged when it comes to social media – low views, likes, follows, etc. can feel so personal – but everyone deals with the same issues. Staying present and posting consistently is the best way to growth.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
We create larger installations and event rentals in the Kansas City metro area, and we also have an Etsy shop with digital downloads and some items that can ship nationally.
