We were lucky to catch up with Caitlin Miranda recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlin, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a time you helped a customer really get an amazing result through their work with you.
I had this incredibly touching experience during one of my sessions with a new mom. Initially, she wasn’t keen on being in the photos, understandably not feeling her best after giving birth. But I felt compelled to gently encourage her. After a bit of back and forth, she finally agreed. Later, she reached out to me with heartfelt gratitude for nudging her to take those photos. She realized how precious that memory was, and it made me so happy to have played a part in capturing it for her. It’s moments like these that remind me why I do what I do – helping moms embrace and cherish these fleeting moments, even when they might not feel their best.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Photography has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember, but it was my parents who truly recognized it as my calling. They gifted me my first camera, igniting a passion that would shape my future. It all started during a family trip to Hawaii, where I eagerly turned my lens towards my little sister, capturing moments that would become the cornerstone of my journey.
Fueled by a desire to learn and create, I pursued further education at an art school in London, where I honed my craft and delved deeper into the world of photography. It was during this time that my path led me to a unique opportunity – working as a newborn photographer at a hospital.
This experience was transformative. Immersed in the tender moments of new life, I discovered a profound love for capturing the essence of maternity, newborns, and families. It’s a privilege to be entrusted with preserving these precious moments – the first smiles, the tender embraces, the sheer joy of new beginnings.
For me, photography isn’t just about taking pictures; it’s about freezing moments in time that will be cherished for generations to come. Families invite me into their lives, allowing me to document their journey and create tangible memories that will endure the test of time. There’s something magical about the power of a photograph – it has the ability to transport us back to a specific moment, evoking emotions and memories we thought were lost.
I consider it an honor to play a part in passing down these memories, knowing that the images I capture will be treasured, shared, and passed on for years to come. In a world that moves at a fast pace, being able to preserve moments of love, laughter, and connection is a privilege I hold dear.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most fulfilling aspect of being a creative, particularly a photographer, is the opportunity to capture each family in their most authentic light. My aim is always to immortalize genuine smiles and spontaneous laughter. I want these families to look back at their images and see themselves exactly as they are – raw, real, and wonderfully imperfect.
Every session presents a unique canvas because every family is distinct. It’s a privilege to witness and document the intricacies of each family dynamic, tailoring my approach to best reflect their essence. From the quiet moments of tenderness to the bursts of joyful chaos, I strive to encapsulate the true spirit of each family.
It’s these nuances that make every session special and rewarding. I consider it an honor to be entrusted with the task of capturing these fleeting moments, knowing that the images created will serve as timeless reminders of the love, connection, and uniqueness of each family I have the pleasure of photographing.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
It’s true, there’s often a misconception that photography is just about pressing a button, but the reality is far richer and more complex. It’s the countless hours spent mastering the intricacies of camera settings, delving into the depths of Photoshop to refine editing techniques, and tirelessly honing a distinctive style that sets photographers apart.
Beyond technical skills, it’s about the meticulous preparation that goes into every shoot – scouting locations, conceptualizing ideas, and ensuring every detail is thoughtfully considered. It’s the ongoing communication with clients, from initial inquiries to post-session follow-ups, nurturing relationships built on trust and understanding.
But perhaps the most profound aspect is the emotional investment – the willingness to be vulnerable and open, to be invited into the intimate moments of a family’s life and entrusted with immortalizing them in a way that feels authentic and true. It’s a privilege and a responsibility that I hold dear, knowing that each click of the shutter captures not just a moment, but a precious memory that will be treasured for years to come.
Photography, for me, is about so much more than capturing images; it’s about preserving fleeting moments, encapsulating emotions, and weaving together the tapestry of human experience. It’s a profound art form that allows us to freeze time, if only for a moment, and savor the beauty of life as it unfolds before us.
