We were lucky to catch up with Caitlin Messerschmitt recently and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlin, appreciate you joining us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
I soft launched my business in July of 2020. I wanted to “try-it-on” and see how it would feel. As a deeply feeling individual, I work based on feelings. I asked friends and acquaintances if they would allow me to meet with them and practice listening, sharing, giving ideas. Prior to the “official launch” on February 14th 2022, I worked through how I wanted to show up for people and how I wanted to present to the world. It was very much a reinvention of myself beyond what I had imagined. It is important for me to also do the work! There is a part of me that wishes I would have started a little sooner, at least with the soft launch. But I am a growing and changing individual that believes in the timing of the universe so I tend to not have regrets—just learned lessons.
Caitlin, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I grew up listening to my mom on the phone; hearing one side of the conversation as she helped a friend through a problem. I’d listen for hours thinking to myself how wise she was and how much money she could make if she was charging people (Ha-Ha). What my little brain didn’t understand yet was how a like we are! My mom and I have always had a gift of seeing people–Really seeing them. Not because of what people are saying or the problem they are having or working through, but because we can see their intention, sense the undertones, read their body language (even over the phone) and see into people’s hearts. I would venture to that we also could also see through societal norms. With an unconventional upbringing I was born and raised questioning the norms of society. That combination of gifts is not only comforting to people but it’s also useful. We all have been “in the soup.” We’ve been so far into the layers of life and conflict that we can’t recognize what everyone else is asking of us—to be able to see which way is up from here. My guidance as a coach is to help you see you, to pull back the layers, to see through the noise, to bring you back to you. It’s simple and complex all at the same time. We can work through hearing YOU, breaking down the noise of others (society, family, rules, biases), and once you can hear yourself again, layering back in what YOU want to help guide your life. I am a coach, a guide, an intuitive, a mom, a teacher, a learner, a grower, a nurturer.
What sets me apart is the lack of judgment that I bring to my work. One of the things that is easy to do when you SEE (often what others do not see in themselves) is that it can cause friction in what they ‘could be doing/changing/acknowledging.’ I work really hard to see it, know it, and separate that from who they are as a human. “People grow when they are loved well. If you want to help others to heal, love them well without agenda” – Mike McHargue. I love people through their journey.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I would maybe say that I couldn’t trust myself. After some big life blows to my world and my confidence, I have had to slowly build my self-trust back up. To re-learn that I do have good instincts and I can follow them again. It’s something I also work with clients on. It’s a wonderful place to start because really everything starts from you.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
By far, word of mouth. When people share something that I have said or done that has impacted them, it is really special to be thought of in that way. If I have helped someone and they appreciate that enough to share with others, well that is pretty wonderful.
