We recently connected with Caitlin Lo and have shared our conversation below.
Caitlin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time and start my business sooner, I would. In high school, I freelanced makeup for about 5 to 6 years. Beauty school was always on my mind, but everyone tells you that you need to go to college to make money and be successful. I ended up going to college because my mindset was that I could go to beauty school anytime. College wasn’t for me and I wasted a lot of time when I could’ve been an esthetician already but I love the memories and people that going to college gave me. I would’ve started my business maybe 3 or 4 years ago if I could. I ended up starting my business on August 28, 2022. Many people start off working for someone else but I’ve waited so long for this that I went straight into owning my own business. It’s been the best decision I’ve ever made. I can’t wait until I begin to be consistent with getting clientele and getting my name out there because this is what I love. This is my passion.

Caitlin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I got into the beauty industry because of my best friend, Julie, back home in Iowa. She wore makeup and my mom wouldn’t allow me to wear makeup at that age so when we hung out she would do my makeup. I think that was when we were about 15/16 years old in 2016. I started to have my friends do my makeup and they’re really the ones who taught me and got me into it. I freelanced makeup during high school after that and decided to get legally licensed to perform services on other people.
The services I’m offering are always changing because I want to learn more. I feel like offering more services catches the eyes of other people as well. As an esthetician and makeup artist, I offer waxing for both body and face, brow services, lash services, makeup application and soon enough I’ll be offering facials. I want to offer services that are accessible to everyone. I love that I can make getting ready just a little easier for you and I can help with any skin concerns that you’re having. You can wake up with beautiful filled in brows, curled mascara looking lashes or a clean waxed body/face. I love to make people feel even more beautiful than they already are.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source for getting new clientele for myself right now would be social media and word of mouth. I moved from Iowa to Georgia about a year ago so I started from nothing. I don’t have many connections/know as much people as I wish but social media is so big and influential now. Posting your work and catching the eyes of other people with creativity has been a big key. I go out and network and hand out business cards when I can as well but definitely social media and word of mouth are the biggest help!

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele would be treating my current clientele with the best satisfaction I can guarantee. I always make sure my clients are happy with their service before leaving. I want them to feel welcome and loved because when you offer great customer service that could be a potential word of mouth referral for you and your business! Networking and having business cards/loyalty cards help too. Hand them out when you can. Have friends and family hand them out! Post that look on social media. There will always be someone interested in you and your work. :)
