We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caitlin Hill. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caitlin below.
Caitlin, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I was a hairdresser in Atlanta and one day (for fun) I took my camera to a festival and took photos of the local bands. After I sent over the photos I was hired to shoot one bands again and the others re posted and used the images as profile pics etc and I knew from then on I wanted to be working in a freelance creative world rather than the path I was on in the beauty industry. That one day was so much more fun than the almost 3 years I had put into my current job.

Caitlin, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I started off shooting local bands in Atlanta then move to Los Angeles for “the dream” and luckily for me, it worked out. I then became a full-time freelance videographer/photographer for artists shoot music videos and live concert content.
After doing this for some time, I realized bands in LA really struggle to simply play shows. Venues and promotors can be difficult to work with and “pay to play” seems like the norm. Once I learned things tend to not operate in the artists favor, I thought I’d create events where artists don’t pay a dime and I can record full length live albums (video and audio) WITH a full crowd on top of brining in all kinds of creatives to add to the event. And we did exactly that and called it Skip the Record.
Skip the Record events are all day festivals that consist of live music, live mural art, vendors, flash tattoos. food and bar, all provided by local artists in out community. And best of all is a crowd of nothing but genuine creatives who want to get to know new people and enjoy all the art around them! Bands get a full edited/ multi track mixed and mastered session after playing at our event.
It some real magic we have going and there’s no plan of stopping!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It’s knowing that as creatives we add color to a black and white world! Without painters, photographers, musicians (and soooo many other kind of creatives) we would live in such a dull world of taxes, work, and death. It’s so rewarding knowing we conjure something in our minds and turn it into real life.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Support local art. Rather that’s buying prints from an artist flea market or supporting your friends in local bands and throwing money in the tip jar on the front of the stage! It’s so important because the $10 you give an artists goes so much further than throwing money to huge corporations. SUPPORT LOCAL!!!
