We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cait Ross Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cait, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My coaching & training company, Potential Haus was born from my own person experience (and at times, what felt like a nightmare) moving through and healing from major burnout.
I was a little over 7 years into my corporate career as a VP for a Fortune 100 Bank when I experienced my first ever panic attack. It was intense to say the least. From that summer day in August of 2016, I started to experience panic attacks on a daily basis — among a myriad of other symptoms that spanned chronic inflammation, fatigue, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances and more.
After a 2 year period trying everything to heal myself & feel normal again, it wasn’t until I discovered nervous system work and the power of our nervous systems to help us heal — that I finally felt major relief in just a 2-3 week period of using these newly discovered tools.
I knew I discovered something big! And I knew it was my mission to help other humans unlock their potential through the nervous system. I started my coaching & training company to help leaders and high-performing teams in the corporate space, as well as mission-driven founders and entrepreneurs to build their businesses and their lives in a way that honored not only their external goals – but also their inner spirit and how they desire to feel deep down. At times, this can feel like an act of rebellion in our modern world that prioritizes outcomes & the speed and velocity of achieving results above all else.
Fast forward, my team and I have supported & guided 360K+ people in rewiring their nervous system to unlock more vibrant wellbeing, up-level their leadership skills, and unlock more creativity, more revenue & impact in their organizations and communities.
Nervous system work not only helps us heal from common human experiences like chronic stress & burnout — but it also helps us be more emotionally connected leaders; helps us be more strategic & creative in how we solve business problems; and is the path to create more human-first workplaces and environments where people can unlock their potential, find greater purpose, and feel better while doing it.
The work we do is unique in that most solutions to our most common “people problems” — the big challenges we face that lead to major change fatigue, lackluster leadership, and high stress levels & burnout — are limited to cognitive (mindset) modalities & tactical action steps that involve “just pushing through” or summoning what humans like to call – willpower.
The reality is that 80% of our thoughts, feelings & daily habits (and therefore our results) come from what’s happening inside our body (not our mind). If we want to address the root causes of our everyday human challenges at home & at work — we need to address the entire nervous system, not just the intellectual mind.
Adopting & using a somatic (i.e. body) based approach to shifting and evolving human behavior is the missing ingredient in our most common individual and collective challenges — spanning our health & wellbeing; our ability to lead oneself & others (regardless of the role or title we have); and to grow our businesses in a way that feels congruent with the life we really want to be living.
Cait, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Our flagship signature offering is our training certification program called, NeuroSomatics. In this 6-month immersive program, we teach, train & empower other coaches and human transformation experts to develop the coaching & space-holding skills to work with their clients’ nervous systems. In this program, not only do we support coaches to up-level their coaching craft and abilities, we help them with the strategy side of their business — helping them to translate the power of nervous system work to mainstream audiences and clients. Our students around the globe are helping to bring nervous system work to industries across many domains such as: business, leadership, healthcare, technology, hospitality, small business, HR, wellness & fitness, financial & professional services, and more.
In our work with B2B clients and organizations, we customize 6-12 month training & coaching engagements for various teams & people populations such as: new managers, senior leadership, teams navigating change or transition, sales & GTM teams and high potential groups.
I am most proud that my team & I really walk the walk. We are not perfect (no one is!) but we always strive to embody the core values, teachings, behaviors and mindsets that we help our clients to learn and embody themselves.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
One of the biggest beliefs I’ve had to unlearn is that hard work equals more success.
In our society, we are regularly told and taught that working harder and longer will lead to more & better results — and that somehow will make us happier and more fulfilled.
I have learned firsthand (and continue to learn this lesson) that success comes from being in alignment with your core values; embodying the beliefs, feelings & energy that you desire to feel; being strategic in your planning & decisions; and surrounding yourself with a team, partners, mentors & loved ones that support you and can help you see your blind spots in a compassionate way.
Of course, there will be seasons where more effort and intention are required; but the blanketed “just work hard” — is a belief that often leads people to burnout and feel unsatisfied and unfulfilled in their work.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
One of the most effective (and my favorite) strategies for growing our business has been speaking.
In our industry, the nature of our work is very deep and intimate for the people we are serving and looking to serve. Nervous system work & somatic coaching is still quite a blue ocean and a newer industry that continues to build momentum every day.
Strategic speaking allows us to connect with future clients and audiences to educate, inspire, share stories and help them see and feel the possibilities that are on the other side of making the decision to do this important inner work.
