We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cait Fanning and Jaden Decker a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Cait and Jaden, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Since we were younger, my sister and I have been connected through art. We talked about the idea of starting a business together, which turned into a creative ambition to share our passion with all of you. A simple idea that developed into something special. Growing up on Cape Cod inspired us to bring our aspiration to life.Through the beauty of the ocean and beach, we were motivated to create art that would bring a piece of the Cape to your home. We are eleven years apart and wanted to find something we could do together while pursuing a dream of owning our own business. We used our childhood on the Cape as a guide to shape our company. Having our dream turn into reality is so remarkable for us because we get to spend time together as sisters doing something we love, opening the door to endless possibilities.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My sister and I decided to put our creativity together to form a Cape Cod inspired business that eventually led us to start our company, Tides and Co. “An idea between two sisters that blossomed into something special”. We have always been connected through art and share a genuine love for the Cape, which turned into a creative ambition to share our passion with all of you. We draw our inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of growing up on Cape Cod, while pursuing a dream of owning our own business. Choosing the company name, “Tides and Co” is based on our memories at First Encounter Beach in Eastham, where low-tide seems to stretch for miles. We started our journey with online sales and wanted to expand and grow by showcasing our company in other ways, by incorporating art shows, events, and becoming part of an artist cooperative on Cape Cod.
We collaborate on ideas and get excited when we come up with something new. Our products and unique designs are all handcrafted by us. We create custom hand-painted wooden signs using reclaimed wood and barn wood from New England. Using watercolor and acrylic mediums, we produce original landscapes and nautical pieces on canvas, wood, and paper. Some originals are coordinated with a vintage or reclaimed wood frame. Our new “Cape Oyster” designs are created with Cape Cod in mind. These products are made up of hand-painted oyster shells, Oyster Chart Frames, and Oyster shell art. The Oyster Charts are made from handmade reclaimed wood frames with a glazed Oyster Chart design. Our custom work will add a little piece of the East Coast to your home.
We wanted to share of our love of art and the Cape with others by offering instructor led and private events! We provide step-by-step guidelines to help you create a piece of art to take home with you. One of our most recent events was a Sip and Paint at a local wine bar, creating “Watercolor Beach Blocks” on reclaimed wood.
We truly take pride in our work and business. Everything comes from the heart and is carefully thought out and designed. Our hope is when customers look at one of our handmade signs or paintings, they are brought back to a special memory or a cherished place.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
We feel the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is knowing that a particular piece of work we created brings a customer back to a special memory or place they cherish. Knowing you created that for someone is special.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Our goal is to provide our customers with a piece of art that captures the inner thought, “I know the perfect place for that”, or “I know someone who would love that”, as well as, “That brings me back to a special memory”. Finding that “Perfect” piece, is a feeling from our customers that we strive for.
