We were lucky to catch up with Cael Dadian recently and have shared our conversation below.
Cael, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
Happiness has lost its meaning to me over the years. I’ve realized that it isn’t a very tangible objective and if it is, there definitely isn’t any shortcut to it. The closest I’ve found that I’m able to get to it is absolutely through creative endeavors and little wins (outside of family and loved ones).
I’m not happy in the rat race. I’m not happy with the unpredictability. I’m not happy with the balls that fall in and out of motion… but I’d be fucking miserable doing anything else.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I started obsessively playing guitar when I was eight years old. After a few years I came a really good 13 year old guitarist and when singing, writing, and production came into play, my guitar obsession dissipated although always remained an important writing tool and performing muscle.
At this point – the theme of my music life and pursuit is throwing paint at the wall every day. Sometimes I’ll lead with my writing, sometimes my production, sometimes make some slow ambient R&B, and sometimes make some upbeat pop music. I’m working on my artist project and chasing placements alike. Just taking swings every day in directions that compel me and working to evoke grander feelings. I’m really proud of some of the feeling in the songs I have out now and I encourage you to take a listen – out of my 15 or so you’ll resonate with one of them.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I haven’t built it… I’ve taken small wins on individual projects, videos, content pieces, songs, etc. but somehow I haven’t amassed the army behind them just yet. I experiment with online content all the time. Some of it stays up and some gets deleted within 48 hours out of sheer embarrassment. I wish I’d starter sooner and one way or another, I’m gonna crack the code.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I met French Montana at a Grammy party earlier this year and (reluctantly) asked him for his email. He gave it to me and I’ve sent a pack of beats to him about once a month since then and on the 5th email, he got back to me which is only a small step in the overall process but a rewarding sign. This has happened a few times over with artists I admire and it’s trained me to ignore results and just keep taking swings.
