We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Cae Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Cae, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
My journey into the world of makeup artistry has been both exhilarating and enlightening, much like a well-executed smoky eye—complex, layered, and ultimately satisfying. My skills were honed through various avenues, including a treasure trove of tutorials, hands-on practice, and yes, the occasional brush with disaster that made my friends wonder if I had been channeling my inner raccoon. However, one of the most transformative experiences of my learning process was attending masterclasses led by the incomparable Danessa Myricks. Her ability to blend humor and professionalism created an environment where learning felt less like a chore and more like an adventure.
Reflecting on my initial days of experimentation—with faces that sometimes resembled abstract art rather than polished looks—I realize that I could have sped up my learning process by embracing more structured learning opportunities, such as those masterclasses. The wealth of knowledge I gained from Danessa was invaluable; her insights into color theory, product application, and the importance of creativity helped me elevate my skills exponentially. If only I had discovered the magic of attending these immersive workshops earlier, perhaps I would have avoided some of the more questionable makeup choices I made in my youth.
As I continue to refine my craft, I’ve identified several essential skills integral to success in the makeup industry. Firstly, creativity is paramount; a makeup artist must not only have an eye for aesthetics but also the ability to innovate and push boundaries.Equally important are strong communication skills, as understanding a client’s vision and effectively conveying one’s ideas is crucial in this line of work. Lastly, adaptability plays a significant role in navigating the ever-evolving trends of the industry—what’s in today could be out tomorrow!
However, the journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. One of the primary obstacles I faced was the overwhelming amount of information available—let’s just say the internet can be a double-edged sword when it comes to learning makeup. It’s easy to get lost in an ocean of tutorials, tips, and trends, resulting in some moments of paralysis by analysis rather than action. And don’t even get me started on the occasional imposter syndrome that crept in, especially after scrolling through the feeds of makeup moguls who make artistry look effortless. Yet, through persistence and a willingness to learn—alongside the occasional faux pas—I’ve been able to carve out my niche in this vibrant industry.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem, society must foster an environment that values and nurtures creativity. This begins with providing accessible funding and grants tailored for artists at various stages of their careers. Community-based initiatives, such as workshops and mentorship programs, can empower emerging talents, while local governments can incentivize businesses to invest in art projects and collaborations. By creating inclusive spaces for artistic expression, society can facilitate a vibrant exchange of ideas and foster a sense of belonging among creatives.
As someone eager to join a beauty organization, I’m enthusiastic about exploring diverse avenues within the beauty industry. My goal is to channel my passion for creativity into areas like product development, marketing, or even sustainability in beauty. I believe that working within a beauty organization will not only allow me to express my artistic vision but also help elevate voices that may otherwise go unheard. It’s important for artists like me to be seen in the industry, as representation can inspire others and create a more inclusive space for all creatives. By uniting forces and collaborating, we can cultivate a rich, diverse beauty landscape that celebrates innovation and authenticity.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
In the makeup industry, one critical lesson I had to unlearn was to never doubt myself. Early in my journey, I often found myself second-guessing my skills and decisions, influenced by the overwhelming presence of established artists and the relentless demand for perfection. I would frequently compare my work to others, feeling inadequate and losing confidence in my unique style and perspective.
The turning point came when I participated in a competitive makeup workshop. Surrounded by talented artists, I initially felt like an outsider. However, as we shared our individual techniques and inspirations, I realized that each person brought something unique to the table, including myself. I began to understand that self-doubt can be paralyzing and that embracing my journey and creative voice was vital to my growth.
Since then, I’ve made it a personal mission to replace doubt with self-belief. I remind myself that my perspective is valuable and that authenticity fosters creativity. This lesson has not only transformed how I approach my artistry but has also empowered me to support and uplift fellow artists in the industry.
