Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Caden Gilbert. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Caden, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I’ve been around music my whole life, so picking a specific moment that I began learning would be challenging. However, I finally decided to buckle down and “learn” guitar around mid-2020. In the height of the pandemic, when I had nothing better to do, I decided I’d teach myself guitar. I learned chords to play my favorite songs, and that was how I got decent on my own.
When I moved on to college I began studying with a classical guitar instructor. This opened my eyes to the world of music in a whole new way. I had never considered teaching as a passion of mine but it became clear to me that that is what I wanted to do.
In hindsight, the only way I think I could have done better would be to begin learning guitar sooner! But the past is in the past.
I think the most essential skills for teaching guitar would be reading music and patience. It’s easy to overlook reading skills in music but it’s so very important! And obviously, working with students takes patience sometimes.
I’m still learning more everyday about the guitar and about teaching. Possibly my largest obstacle to improving faster currently is the time I have to put into it. But all we can do is keep moving every day.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Caden Gilbert. The guitar instructor for Gilbert Studios Music. I got into teaching after having been raised in a musical household. I’ve been immersed in music my whole life, so it’s only natural that I get to work with music as well.
We, at Gilbert Studios, provide music lessons for many different instruments. Including guitar, piano, flute, violin, and more!
We proudly teach with over 28 years of musical experience in both education and performance.
I’m most proud of the way we not only teach our students but build relationships with them. It’s very important to feel welcome with a teacher and even more important to feel like family. That’s our goal.
Starting now, we are beginning to expand and offer new services as well. In addition to teaching, we now offer a DJ service for events and parties! We are very excited to begin this service!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I believe the most rewarding aspect of being creative is the community. As a college student and performer I interact every day with the music community. It is such a blessing to be a part of something bigger. I thrive when I’m working with a team or an ensemble to perform, write, or anything else.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Some non-creatives assume that music isn’t a real job or that it’s not able to be made into a profitable one. What creatives will tell you is that while it is harder to make a living as a musician, it is possible and if you do it right, it can become very profitable.
