We recently connected with Cabria Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Cabria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear how you think where to draw the line in terms of asking friends and family to support your business – what’s okay and what’s over the line?
Support is something that you honestly just have to let happen. It’s not something that you want to force. It’s perfectly natural for you to want support from your family and friends. Trust me if they believe in what you have going for yourself and if it’s their price range. They’re definitely going to support. From my experience, I’ve honestly had more clientele from strangers. Over the years I had to learn that God will send me the business. There’s so much to focus on when having a business, no need to stress over who’s “supporting” you. Just pray about it and keep promoting!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
After working in the corporate world I found myself seeking interest in being “crafty”. Had my first child, became a stay at home mom, showed my husband some materials that I would need to try a new hobby. The hobby turned into my peace. I started taking orders from friends and family first. Word of mouth spread and before I knew it the birth of Bria’s Brilliance happened.
With every custom request I began to expand the customs that I offered. Here at Bria’s Brilliance we offer custom shirts, drink ware, business branding, treats and balloon setups, and Host Pop Up Shops for the community.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
When it comes to growing your clientele, understand that it’s ok to say “No”. Not all money is good money! Never make someone pressure you into doing business with them.
I’ve had to turn down a few orders for different reasons. There’s a different vibe when doing business with people. I strive to provide an unforgettable experience. If the communication or attitude isn’t right. I feel like I shouldn’t stress myself to “hurry up” and complete your order.
People have to understand and respects peoples time when shopping with a local business, Most people like myself operate alone. Hence why we have polices in place. If you’re unsure about ordering take the time to review their work, read reviews, ask around if necessary and most importantly read their policies:
Have you ever had to pivot?
I critical moment for me was finding out I was pregnant for a second time. I started my business when I had my daughter. Felt like I was slipping into postpartum depression and wanted an escape. Blessed that it was an outlet for myself.
Finding out I was pregnant with my son I felted a mix of emotions. Like omg how am I going to run a business at home with two kids. It was easy that’s for sure and it took a lot of adjusting. My son is almost 3 years old and we’re still working on it. But with prayer, a spouse that’s supportive and some mean determination. I strive to get up and make something happen regardless of how I’m feeling. I treat my business like a child of my own. If I don’t show up and show out then nobody will.
