We recently connected with Cabell Rhode and have shared our conversation below.
Cabell, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
I think that anyone who says they have it figured out is missing something. I have always found obstacles and sometimes you can work around them other times you have to find a new path. For example for many years during my career I could not find a local studio. I had to work around it by doing home made production. This limited the sonics and overall quality of my earlier large scale projects and songwriter albums. Location had turned out to be a stopping point so many times through out my career, and there was not as much self knowledge as there is know. For example everywhere you go now someone is selling you an aspect of the business through ads. Whether that be getting more booking, mastering, or just how to setup studios. Back in the earlier parts of my career early 2000’s-2010, the industry was still trying to play catch-up with technology and how to come to terms with it as a whole.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into writing in my youth and music followed in my later teens. I worked with several different bands groups though out the years, but none of them ever really formed much unison. The longest lasting musical endeavor I have work on is with Bo Daddy Harris. We have worked together since 2017-2018 after meeting in open mic. I told Bo that I thought that he should get with a band, because I only played guitar. Little did I know that my fingerstyle arrangement on Views Of Mexico lead to us getting together later on to do vocals together on deep truth and then the follow up with wild horse. He has been a large influence on me and the same of true vice versa. We both pushed each other because no around us was going to do it. In a sense we became like a team, but are still very competitive around each others work. We will of course never admit this :-) I have been very fortunate to have someone to bounce ideas off of and be able to talk about how to set certain things up. Through the years I branched out to a Variety of genres, as a need to find the perfect medium or methodology to express myself. I recorded for the first time at a home studio in 2012, and the demos I had were released on sound cloud. I Had no idea about distribution back in those times. I recorded at DSL studios in Louisville in 2017 and considered it a huge victory at the time. Later it would be the same studio that i recorded my full length album love left loss in, and I am still very thankful for the hard work of Mike Baker. I really learned so much from watching him and seeing the way he thought about music in terms of putting the final product together in such a very specific way. It was an incredible learning curve for me and I still remain blessed for the experience. I would say at the end of the day it was passion that drove me to do something music. All of the years of listening to cds, records, tapes etc and dreaming of being able to do it. After all these years of doing music the simple answer is I just started and have hung on all there years for the ride that has become my life in many ways.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
To be able to cement these songs in stone so they can be a home and rest with the creators of previous gnerations that inspired me to do what I love. I would especially like to notice Jim Croce, Nick Drake, and Iron &Wine for their influence and motivation through out these years.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I would not change anything from my journey. I have been blessed for the ups and downs.
