We were lucky to catch up with C. Nichole recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, C. Nichole thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Pan African Think Tank Vol. 1 is an EP that was released on February 12, 2021. It’s the first volume of four that will be released throughout the upcoming years. The purpose of the Pan African Think Tank EPs is to bring awareness to the 501(c)3 non-profit Pan African Think Tank (http://panafricantt.org). Pan African Think Tank is a research institution that focuses on education and entrepreneurship. With the education aspect, I want people of African descent to come away from the music project feeling uplifted, knowledgeable about our history, and empowered. I want them to hear something different from the negativity portrayed to the world via American radio regarding people of African descent. I want other cultures to get a glimpse into our struggles, history, culture, joy, resilience, etc.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I realized I wanted to be in the music industry in any way I could since I was 7 years old. I sang and won several local talent shows and participated in choir. My family moved from Dallas, TX, to Los Angeles, CA, where I became a part of a girl group. I started writing songs at 11 years old, simply because we needed songs. It disbanded, and years later, I moved to attend college at the University of Houston. While majoring in Marketing, I seized the opportunity to intern at one of the “Big 3″ record labels during my time there. Taking all the knowledge I learned, I started my own music publishing company. After demoing tracks for artists and getting feedback from labels, I realized that no one understood my sound and songwriting style and decided to go about music alone. In 2014 I released my 90’s and early 00’s R&B-influenced album, “Coup d’Etat.” My debut album landed singles such as “In My Dreams” and “Why” on internet radio stations on three different continents. “Hope You Hear This (On The Radio)” received FM radio play throughout America, while “Every Day” and “(Just Keep) You Hold On Me” caught the attention of college radio. In 2015 I released the Acoustic R&B genred EP, “Acoustically C.Nichole: Coup d’Etat,” and then the Urban Pop genred “Texas Chick” EP in 2017. After having visited 79 countries by the beginning of 2019, I finally found a way to combine my passion for music with my love for travel with three volumes of “Christin SanDiego” EPs. I stayed true to my Urban Pop roots and melodic songwriting skills with songs and music videos that take you around the world. In 2021, I decided to mix Southern American beats with African grooves and percussion to create the genre Tribal Trill, which flourish throughout the four volumes of “Pan African Think Tank” EPs. Paying homage to people of African descent, I combine historical knowledge that exudes Pan Africanism throughout my lyrics, and showcases different parts of the African continent through my music videos.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
Knowing that what you do is forever planted in history will always and forever be the most rewarding aspect of being an artist. Your creativity and artistry can’t be taken away, especially now in the digital age. When you google “C.Nichole,” there I am with all of my music, my books, and whatever other creative paths I choose to partake in.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society can share and buy! Being an artist is a job, and we have to pay our bills too. Sharing is the best way to get the word out about our art, and with social media, it’s easier than ever to share. When society shares and buys, that tells artists that they see our value and support us.
