We recently connected with C. Nathaniel Brown and have shared our conversation below.
C. Nathaniel, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
The media and entertainment industries have historically gotten a negative rap. In many cases, that hatred was justified as both industries have been known to eat people alive. I’ve witnessed it on all levels in the media where I’ve seen people’s lives ruined for ratings or to sell newspapers. I’ve seen in it the entertainment industry where people’s intellectual property has been stolen right from under them or they were manipulated and abused for position.
As someone who spent more than 20 years as a newspaper and magazine writer and editor, I tried to provide balance to the negativity and sensationalism in the media. I quickly learned how the owners of media outlets control the narrative when it comes to the stories what we see and hear. Likewise, the entertainment industry has caused irreparable damage to many people over the years, including musicians, actors and writers.
I started Expected End Entertainment to raise a different standard in media and entertainment. I wanted to use my personal experiences as well as the experiences of others I’ve come in contact with in over 30 years of my involvement in both industries to offer a safe haven for creatives. As we provide services and resources for authors, screenwriters, actors, producers, directors, publishers, etc., we pride ourselves on being open, fair and honest. Oftentimes we go over and beyond what is typical in these industries because of the negative experiences that many of our clients leave to find us. Rather than be just another one of “them”, we want them to leave us saying, “Expected End Entertainment and C. Nathaniel Brown is not like the others.” If they feel like they have been respected, treated fairly, and provided top quality services, we’ve done our jobs. We understand the value of treating people like family and not just a paycheck.
C. Nathaniel, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always been a writer. From the time I was about 4 or 5 years old, I knew that I wanted to be a professional writer, as I used to watch my mother write poetry. During my childhood, I wrote everything from letters to poems to short stories to ideas that I said I would one day put on television and in movies.
I started my career in the media as a newspaper reporter straight out of college. For more than 20 years, I covered such things as high profile murder trials, sports, education, and politics. I met some of the most amazing people in my journey as a journalist. That journey also included me founding my own magazine, managing other magazines and assisting others become journalists and start their own publications.
After publishing my first book in 1996, my desire to help writers evolved into my becoming a writing and publishing coach. I have since published 20 books of my own and have helped thousands of writers become published authors and publishers.
I transitioned into photography, owning a photography studio where I specialized in wedding photography and portfolio development for models, actors and entrepreneurs. During this time, I mentored new photographers.
When I married the writing with the images from photography, it was a natural transition into the entertainment industry as a filmmaker. Those notes I used to write as a child actually made their way into my early film projects. Building a team to produce a short film was fulfilling and showed me that it was a continuation of everything I had done to that point in my life.
So, I created Expected End Entertainment to be an umbrella company for everything I did in media and entertainment. Our motto is to: “Entertain, Educate and Empower!” as we exceed expectations in media and entertainment. Our services include: book publishing; writer coaching and consulting; scriptwriting; film production; and more.
We also created EX3 Academy, which is the educational arm of Expected End Entertainment. Through the academy, we offer numerous media and entertainment webinars, workshops, classes, trainings, conferences, and retreats. The goal is to always create opportunities for people to learn and grow, especially those exploring new areas.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
In industries that have had bad reputations for a long time, an individual or a company stands out by how it treats people. I have made a concerted effort to be the new standard in media and entertainment for the relatively small portion of the industries in which my company and I serve. As a result, we have received repeat clients and have received numerous referrals because of our hospitality and our commitment to being authentic and trustworthy. I have heard so many stories of how people were lied to, deceived, robbed, and misrepresented. I have also shared my stories of how I’ve been the victim of some of those things, how it made me feel, and how I try to protect our clients. That’s where it becomes personal to me to try to restore people’s trust and faith by following through with the promises we make. When we do, that leads to word of mouth advertising from the people we’ve served. That good news often precedes us and opens doors for me, as an individual, our team, and for the company.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative to me is creating content that I am proud of and having the audience it’s intended for receive it. I often tell my clients not to lose sight of why they do what they do and for whom they do it. It’s inevitable that some people won’t like what you produce but some people will love it. Those are the ones it was meant for.
That doesn’t mean that the book, article, song, or film is perfect and you don’t have room to improve, but it means that it has reached a certain group of people.
A large reason I write books and create movies and television programs is to help fulfill the vision of Expected End Entertainment, which is to educate, entertain and empower. So, a lot of the content centers around current events, social commentary, and topics that are dear to me. For example, I wrote a short film that deals with dementia because I watched my aunt and cousin’s interaction when my aunt no longer recognized her daughter. I know other people will be able to relate to that story because of their personal story and those who have not experienced it will learn about dementia.
Additionally, I promised to always teach what I’ve learned to others. So, when I help others achieve their goals of creating content and telling stories, it’s just as rewarding as if I had done it myself because it’s never just about me.
