We caught up with the brilliant and insightful BZIRPS a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, BZIRPS thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I think learning the craft is very fundamental for every artist starting out! Music itself is an opinion based art form, but when it comes down to it you need to know basics and fundamentals of making music to be able to build credibility as an artist. For example if an unknown artists releases a song thats mixed very differently from the industry standard, most people are going to questions your ability to mix. But if Drake dropped the same song with the same type of mix it’d be perceived as an artistic choice. Because he’s already established that credibility with the audience. All said and done learning the craft in all aspects will give you a long lasting career in music. I got lucky as a kid because I was forced to do piano lessons growing up, giving me a good start on the basics from a young age. I grew to love the piano and music as a whole. I started dedicating a lot of free time to creating music and learning more instruments. Eventually I enrolled at the Institute Of Production And Recording in Minneapolis MN, and throughout my junior and senior year of high school I did half days there learning more about recording and mixing techniques. After I graduated high school, I enrolled at Los Angeles recording school and received an associates in music production. Now I spend my time taking my craft even further and working in different genres to expand my skillset.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Im a recording artist and producer. I spend most of my time writing and producing my own music, but I also have a few artists I write and produce for as well. I love to work with other artists looking to build a sound and a brand around that. As a producer I see it as my job to first, really get to know my client and who they are. Second I like to create a idea of a sound, a general theme in the music that connects everything but never sounds the same. Last I like to strive for originality, especially in the music and brand. I think good original music will always make it to the right ears. I really like to keep clients for a larger project or multiple singles to be able to get to know, and build that connection with the artist. One of the things i’m most proud of Is how far i’ve came since when I started. I was that nobody kid in a small town that was always told nobody makes it. I wouldn’t say i’ve made it yet, but I’ve made it farther than anyone thought I would and that’s more than enough to keep me going.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me the most rewarding part of being a creative is the illusion that the end product is the reward. Every time I start a new project I feel as if i’m rushed to finish so I can stand back and enjoy my creation. But every time I finish I realize that the process was just as if not more rewarding that completing it. I think when you use your art as a way to deal with emotions the process is the part you crave. When art becomes a product, completing it becomes the reward. So for artists living off of the product its a hard balance to find and requires a lot of dedication.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I would have known how helpful and refreshing it is to work with other people on your own projects and create in different genres. I think it really helps expand style for artists.
