We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Byron Mitchell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Byron below.
Hi Byron, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
In life, I’ve learned that at times success is as close as the other side of taking the right risk. The most recent major risk I’ve taken was moving my family to Houston. Prior to moving to Houston, I was in Colorado for almost 12 years. Living somewhere for that long, it’s easy to become comfortable. At times, I started to feel like I was at my peak and felt that I needed to relocate for more opportunities. The risk worked out in my favor. I was able to rebrand, refocus, and continue my mission in life. I would say take that risk no matter how stressful and uncertain things may seem. Step out on faith.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I work in the tech industry and have been doing that for almost 10 years. I’ve worked for a couple of big tech companies, and I also coach. More recently, I am starting a nonprofit to help recovering addicts and ex-inmates transition into living life as healed individuals. I understand the importance of having a second chance, as well as how important it is to have the right person in your corner. Therefore, I am starting a mentorship program called Big Bro Mentorship, which stands for Building Resources and Opportunities. My overall goal is to help as many men and women transition to a better life by being that support.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I think the most important thing for succeeding in my field is passion. To do what I am doing, you really have to have a passion and love for what you do. You need to have a different type of care and love for humanity, as well as firsthand experience and a story that can relate to the ones you’re helping.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Growing up, I faced a lot of obstacles. Seeing loved ones affected by drug addiction and crime put me in a position to see firsthand the effects. Being the oldest of my siblings, I understood things and also knew that I wanted to take a different route. I was a fast learner, and I knew that I wanted to be different. I wasn’t afraid of standing out and being unique. I defined “cool,” and I stuck with that throughout my life, and it worked for me. I am nowhere near where I want to be in life—not even close—but I’m headed in the right direction, and that’s the most important thing. I could easily sit and make a million excuses for why things are not working out for me, but that’s easy, and I choose to take a different path, even if that means taking the stairs.
