Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Byron Jones. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Byron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I worked on was the album, “Drank & Bottled Up Emotions.” During this album, I was in a place where life kept beating me up. I was in the process of starting my independent record label, Breakin’ Bank Records, LLC, and could not catch a break. I lost my dad that year and found out my grandmother had cancer. Meanwhile, things at my employer were not getting any better and I felt stagnant with no growth. At this same time, I was pursing my bachelors degree in Business Administration and felt sort of overwhelmed. So, in this album I expressed the pain, loneliness, hurt, and thoughts to rebuild myself. The album is very personal to me, as I used my life issues and others around me to inspire this impeccable work. The album consist of stories and a journey that you can follow from beginning to end. Every time I hear it I get reminded of where I was and what it took for me to get out of it. My emotions were very bottled up and I hardly would talk to anyone. So, I talked to the world through this album instead.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Most people may not know but I go by the artist name, Byron Bank. I got into music back in my school days by performing in talent shows with a group of friends. The passion later grew to a strong love to join the music industry professionally in the late 2009. Today, I am the owner of my own independent record label, Breakin’ Bank Records, LLC, and publishing company, WeSayWhatWeWant Music.
The products we offer include digital and streaming music available on all major digital platforms, we offer exclusive merchandise such as physical CDs, cassette tapes, vinyls, label and artist related apparel, promotional stickers, pens, and more. The services the we are launching late in the 3rd quarter of this year, including marketing, publishing, open slots for showcases, recording, and mixing engineer services for potential clients.
The goal is to help others reach their potential and provide knowledge based of my experiences and investment decisions. I am the most proud of this because throughout my musical journey if I had someone in my corner genuine enough to share their knowledge, I think some parts of my success would have happened sooner. Everything I accomplished has been through risk taking, and going through lessons that prepare me for the future. Therefore, I am willing to share what I have been blessed with and continue to gift to potential artists, fans, and other entrepreneurs.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being an artist for me is being able to reach people. I have the ability to express my thoughts and emotions in a form that others can possibly relate to. So, when a person walks up to me, DMs me, or even come to a show, I feel accomplished. It motivates me to keep going, even if it is just one person in the room. Over time, one person from every show will grow and spread the word to their friends and family. There’s is no better reward than that.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think this lesson could relate to anything but I had to learn to put the fun back into the music. The reason I say this is because you can get so caught up in the business aspect that the fun gets removed. The focus goes from having a good time to driving to hit targets and numbers, which at some point affected by creativity. So one told me the music industry is 90% business and 10% talent. Therefore, I tried instill that in my business model, but I started to realize the fun part was missing. So, I believe this equation is close but not accurate. I saw people around get unmotivated, angry, upset, and overall energy was not its best. So, if I ever feel like the fun is slipping away, it is time to step back and pivot but keep the objective in the forefront.
