We were lucky to catch up with Byron Duncan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Byron, thanks for joining us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
Success is a subjective mindset. It all depends on how you deem what success is. To me ,success comes from the accomplishments that we set out to make. If I set a goal to book at least 1 photoshoot per month and I’ve reached that goal, now I’m successful based on that goal. However, reaching that accomplishment/goal is what drives me to be be more successful and reach further accomplishments/goals. Success is also keeping a positive mindset and knowing that whatever decision you make, you choose the positive outcome to manifest over the negative outcome. What you choose to focus on becomes your reality.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Growing up in Houston,Tx I’ve always been a fan of sports. After graduating college with a sports management degree, I had the opportunity to work in professional sports for 7 years. However,I’ve always had a passion for art through many things like drawing, painting, film, etc. Photography and creating content started as a side hustle and photography caught my eye because it’s a form of art. I didn’t know a thing about it when I started, but I loved the art form. In 2015, I bought a camera and I taught myself and did research on how to use that camera. I also read something about the industry that said, “get a camera and start shooting.” As I started taking pictures, I gained a deeper perspective of it and I continued teaching myself and perfecting my craft. Photography started as a hobby, but now it’s a business. I enjoy expressing myself through photography. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. What sets me apart from other photographers is that I come with a unique perspective and vision that I believe you have to have a gift for. Because of my gift , I’m able to treat my photography business as a hobby and find the fun in it. Most clients don’t know what vision they want, and I’m able to help them create that vision. Sometimes the vision becomes greater than the vision that was set originally between the client and I. What also sets me apart is my diverse shooting styles. I specialize in events, family, maternity, community, sports, and travel photography. My brand offers a unique experience of capturing and creating those special moments and natural perspective for clients to relive special memories.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
A lot of non creators don’t understand the actual creative process. Many struggle with it. Some people think photography is getting a camera and taking pictures. There’s a lot more that goes into it, such as editing, which can be difficult at times. Sometimes you have to create the vision you want through the editing process. Also, finding the perfect angle/shot, the right lighting, and being able to tell the right story of the moment.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is being able to actually tell the story. Being able to paint the picture literally and figuratively. Being able to create those natural and special moments for people and being able to see the natural smiles on peoples faces through the creative process.
