We were lucky to catch up with Byeongdoo Moon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Byeongdoo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share a story about the kindest thing someone has done for you and why it mattered so much or was so meaningful to you?
As a child, I was rather sad and lonely, and I felt that no one really cared about me. However, the day before my graduation from elementary school, I was so surprised to find a wrapped gift in my desk! It was a letter and such beautifully knitted mittens from my teacher. Words cannot express the love and warmth I felt that day, in my heart and in my hands! That has been the motivation to choose my path. I treasure that memory and go back to it whenever I go through difficult times.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Through my artwork, I hope to communicate and express our ongoing search for the meaning of life and the great value of life. What I’ve learned is that every moment of life, visible or invisible, is always present in existence. My artwork starts with an image that anyone can understand, making it easier to feel and experience art. It allows you to awaken through your own visual experiences in the everyday life you know. The difference between what I can see and what I can’t see depends on whether you and I can exchange meaning with each other. I want to communicate and share this ongoing conversation for as long as possible.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I feel fulfilled and happy when I am able to communicate a story through an art piece. It’s rewarding when it can bring comfort to those who see it.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I think that seeing and hearing the stories of the world and faithfully telling them through my work is my mission and my destiny, which I accept.
