Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Butch Dawson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Butch thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
As in company ill just consider my rap name for that, but how I got the name butch, I was in a 7th grade after school program. It was about learning how to make comic books. Me and my best friend at the time teamed up to make one. I was the illustrator and my friend was the writer. we mad everything from the meetings, to characters, weaknesses and super powers. Our villain name was Butch Dawson. So fast forward to when I was rapping and wanted to rebrand, I went with Butch Dawson.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Jujuan Allen, my stage is Butch Dawson, 30 years old born and raised in West Baltimore, MD. I am a Recording Artist, a visual artist, Model and designer. How I got into the industry all started with rapping and making music. I was 18 at the time and just graduated high school. My grades weren’t that bad in school but I got accepted into all these colleges and I just felt like I needed to pursue music as soon as I left school so I decided to do that. I began to make music and build my buzz which eventually led me to working with more artists around the city. So my sound expanded and that eventually led me to modeling because I would do music videos and people would love to see my face and my look . Got signed as a model in 2019 with a old agency called “Akrav” (doesn’t exist anymore) and the rest was history. Ive gotten to be in shoots for Adidas, Apple, Telfar etc. I am most proud of my perseverance because I could of been gave up. I go through so many ups n downs that im ok with not going up for whatever amount of time that can become. I love what I do so much that at the end oof the day, thats all you can do to satisfy yourself. love what your doing.
How did you build your audience on social media?
For me, making music and modeling takes some form of etiquette and commitment when you are working to put yourself out there via social media. Press shoots, Announcements, promoting other businesses all that. I remember when I first wanted to model, I sat down and strategized how I was gonna push my style and my look to the world so I would take cool conceptual outfit photos and post them on instagram every three days too stay consistent and I did that for three months. Clothing lines and different brands reached out to me in the matter of two months. If your on social media trying to expand your business, Its important to have a goal in mind on the audience you want to reach, making the content for it, and being consistent. When the content is really good quality like 4k videos or digital/film photos you are separating yourself from a bunch of people in your market and consumers will gravitate to your brand because it simply looks more professional.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I would say keep making good work, run some ads to push your work into new spaces. You can’t deny good work, and soon enough you’ll have an organic fanbase of people who stumbled across your work, and enjoy the type of work you create.
