We were lucky to catch up with Busayo Agbesanwa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Busayo, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
I’ll never forgot the first client I ever got. I had been doing hair for a friend that I had gone to school with and it was about a few months into her consistently coming to me for her hair styles that she started referring me to her coworkers. To my bewilderment, one of her coworkers had been looking for a stylist for a while that would be able to manage the texture of her hair while being able to work with her schedule and luckily for that was me. That experience really set the ball rolling for me and bussiestyles as a whole.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those that don’t know me, Hi my name is Busayo and I’m at a hairstylist for Bussiestyles a hair business that provides style and ease without the stress of breaking the bank. I’ve been doing hair for about 10 years now with styles including corn rows, twists, braids and hair coloring as well as providing custom braiding hair and Virgin hair bundles for my clientele. I began my journey as a stylist, funny enough from a young age, learning the craft from my mother who used to style my sister and I’s hair and one day she was to exhausted to do my hair so I took it upon myself to stay up for over 10 hours to braid my own hair and I’ve been doing hair ever since. As a stylist and client, I learned that the simplicity of having the option for a stylist to come to me without charging an arm and a leg was a very rewarding resource so that a motto that I have enacted in my business.
I am immensely proud of how far my business has come in the last few years and the level and dedication and persistence that I’ve had for it in the last few years. I wholeheartedly acknowledge that there are many other stylists out there but everyday and every stylist is a new opportunity to learn and grow and advance not only for myself but my business as a whole.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One thing I had to unlearn very early on in my business is not giving cheap or free handouts because there are people that will pour in or pretend to pour into your business because it is a free standpoint but not pour into it when you start to elevate and also it’s about self growth as well no one will take you seriously if you don’t take yourself seriously.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
As my company is still growing and developing the best source of new clientele for me is referrals and the instagram explore page. It takes just one person to see your work and share that with one person to cause the biggest amount of influence. And for those that have done this and continue to do this for me, I am forever extremely grateful.
