We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bunny Hou. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bunny below.
Alright, Bunny thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
So I actually still work full time with a “regular job” in addition to running my business however, hoping that one day this will change! However, I did have to quit my phlebotomist job and find a job where I can work from home in order to have more time for my business. I really enjoyed serving my community, helping others and working directly with patients but I knew that Hazy Bunny was my purpose, my baby, etc and I knew I had to make some sacrifices in order to ensure I can uplift my business.
However, I am indeed so much happier as a business owner! I know I definitely work a lot more because it’s basically having two jobs but I absolutely love Hazy Bunny. It really fulfills me to know that I’m making products that help others in many different ways. In the past, I thought that my primary goal in life was to work in healthcare for the rest of my life because I love to help folks but I realize that I wanted to help folks in a different way. Ever since I’ve started running my business, creating products, etc – I feel like I really have found my purpose so I absolutely do not mind working and working because it’s really what I love to do! However, I also do my best to ensure to take breaks when necessary and time for myself because burnout can come so quickly and I do not want running my business to become tedious and stressful.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Well, my name is Bunny and I run an online Self Care Boutique called Hazy Bunny. I create bath and body products that soothe the mind, body and soul. I started Hazy Bunny during the height of the pandemic; I was working as a phlebotomist at the time and was experiencing extreme burnout. I absolutely loved serving the community and helping others but I saw that my colleagues as well as myself were constantly putting ourselves in a situation where we were filling everyone else’s cups except our own. We were constantly taking care of others, but never putting ourselves first. I wanted a brand that reminds others that it is absolutely not selfish to take care of you first. How can you expect to fill others’ cups without even filling your own? How can you fill someone else’s cup if there’s nothing in yours? When you’re on a plane, at the beginning of the flight, when they explain the whole oxygen thing in case of an emergency – they say to put yours on first before helping someone else — this is you making sure you take care of you first so that you have the capacity to help others!
I do believe that self care is so much more than bubble baths and face masks; it’s so much deeper. However, right now Hazy Bunny is limited to bath and body products at this time. I definitely want to continue to expand but I want to ensure I have time to perfect what I have now and continue to grow as I research.
My products are made for folks with dry + dehydrated skin; I currently have a 4-step product line called ‘The Hydration Station’ that contain nourishing and hydrating oils that keep your skin moisturized all day long. The products include a nourishing body wash, a body polish for exfoliation, an in-shower body lotion to keep the moisture in your skin and then an extremely moisturizing body cream to finish off your body care routine.
My family and I struggle from severely dry skin – no matter how much lotion we were using, I felt like it essentially evaporated as soon as I put it on. I spent a lot of time doing research and wanted to utilize ingredients that nourish deeply into the skin so I didn’t have to constantly rub on lotion every hour of the day. I spent a lot of time and money trying to perfect the products to ensure I fulfill my purpose for Hazy Bunny – to soothe mind, body & soul and to remind others to take care of you first!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson that I had to unlearn was thinking that asking for help is a sign of weakness. This absolutely in no way is a sign of weakness! I’m gonna repeat this for the folks in the back! Asking for help is NOT a sign of weakness!! It is a strength!
I am constantly asking my close friends, family and even my clients/customers for their opinions! For one – it strengthens the bond you have with your community which I think is so important to a business. It’ll also help you and your business grow especially getting advice from someone who may know more.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I really trust a lot in the Divine/Universe & God. Someone once told me that everything in the universe that occurs is intentional and everything is meant to be. Trust the struggle, trust the process and everything that is meant to be yours is already yours. This is something that I stand by; just letting things be as they are and trusting that even if things do not work out, that it is for a better purpose.
