We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bunmi Lawal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bunmi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been baking for as long as I can remember, starting from making brownies during my middle school days to creating yummy treats for my college roommates and friends. However, in early 2021, I decided to focus on baking cakes with the objective of honing my skills to create the perfect cake for my daughter’s birthday. As I worked towards making her first birthday cake, I discovered a newfound passion for the art of making aesthetically pleasing cakes that also tasted really good. Throughout 2021, I shared my cake-making progress on social media. Several of my friends who saw my posts requested I bake cakes for their events. This demand led me to start Sweet Boom Bakery in January 2022.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sweet Boom Bakery takes pride in using only the finest ingredients to create cakes that are not only delicious but also visually stunning. We specialize in crafting buttercream cakes for all types of occasions, such as baby showers, birthdays, weddings, and corporate events. Our goal is to ensure that every cake we make is not only a tasty treat but also a feast for the eyes. We see each cake as a specialized & custom work of art.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Building a social media audience takes time and effort, and it’s important to remember that the process is all about serving others. When you focus on providing a wonderful experience for your clients, your audience will grow naturally.
For Sweet Boom Bakery, our social media following initially consisted of close friends and my community. This is a great starting point for any business because they know you personally and can vouch for your skills and products. As you continue to provide excellent products and customer service, your clients will be inclined to share their positive experiences with others, which can lead to more referrals and a larger social media following.
One piece of advice for those just starting to build their social media presence is to consistently post high-quality content that is both visually appealing and informative. Engage with your followers by responding to comments and messages promptly and with a friendly tone. Another important aspect is to stay true to your brand and showcase what makes your business unique. For me, this could be highlighting your use of high-quality ingredients or sharing behind-the-scenes glimpses of the cake-making process. By providing value to your followers and staying authentic, you can build a loyal and engaged audience on social media.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner and co-founder is actually my husband. We have been together for quite some time and have always shared a passion for serving others. As I began to focus more on honing my cake-making skills and building a business around it, my husband was fully supportive and eager to join me in the venture.
My husband is an amazing leader with a wealth of experience especially when it comes to the online/digital space. His skills complement mine perfectly, and we work together as a team to run our bakery successfully. We share a deep commitment to providing our clients with the best possible experience, whether that means creating a visually stunning cake or going above and beyond to ensure our customers are satisfied.
Overall, I feel incredibly fortunate to have my husband as my business partner. His support and encouragement is the reason I had the courage to launch this business. Our shared passion for baking and commitment to excellence has made our partnership a great success.
