We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Bubba Albrecht. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Bubba below.
Bubba, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I have a background working with the Teton Valley Ranch Camp, where I served as a camp counselor for many years, guiding kids and cheering them on toward independence in the Wyoming outdoors. The return on investment of working with kids had such a big impact on me. That childlike wonder is what we’re looking to support in every person out there. The kind of hype that is so genuine and real, and it doesn’t have to stop at adolescence.
We are providing language and support as a brand to be passionate and to be unabashedly yourself. That is what it means to “give’r”. It’s about giving it your all and embracing challenges. If we can help people at any age or socioeconomic status to do things in a big way then we’re doing good. No matter if you’re a professional athlete or newbie, you can have no excess of genuine support and encouragement, so we always share our positivity and passion.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I followed what I loved and was passionate about and wanted to share it with others. This became an annual kayaking trip in Canada, which was commemorated with a custom hat. My friends and I coupled the Teton skyline with a Canadian encouragement, “give’r,” which encourages folks to live life on full send. When people started asking about the hat, it became a brand. The care that that trip was founded on translated to the gear that we ended up making, and the spirit of personalization remains one of the most essential aspects of our product line.
We started making gloves and mittens in pursuit of scratching our own itch. Although our start was with hats and tee shirts, once we started with gloves we were hooked. Now they are our primary product. We wanted to see quality gloves for people who believe in making things their own. That is why we offer personalization on premium products. In aim of making a product that is timeless, we are constantly chasing improvement on the products we run. Give’r is built to last for many seasons, and individual to the wearer. Built to wear in, not to wear out.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Give’r originally sold tee shirts and hats. Gloves only became our main product when we decided to experiment with hand-branding five pairs of gloves picked up from Ace Hardware. As with most of our story, the beginnings could not have been more humble. We brought them back to headquarters where we stated working out how we might be able to brand them with initials, when someone dropped by and got excited about the gloves. We sold our first pair of custom gloves right then. Once folks got stoked on the gloves, it marked the beginning of a beautiful new chapter for us. We ran a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign which propelled Give’r onto the main stage of burgeoning small companies. Now gloves are our main product, which never would have even happened had we not tried something new.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Yes! A book called the Big Leap by Gay Hendricks and The Kolbe A Index assessment. The Big Leap was great for identifying the unique set of skills that each member of our team has and to unlearn focusing on our weaknesses. We are conditioned to believe that we have to be good at everything, so unlearning this behavior is essential to maximizing potential where we have it. This feeds directly into the Kolbe A Index, which is about understanding how people approach problems and cognitively process information. Our team uses this test to assess what all of our strengths are and how best we can work together. This allows us to put more of our energy into what we excel at and collaborate with the rest of the team effectively.. I have had to let some responsibilities go that I spent too long fretting about and wasting time on. Now I have people on my team that I delegate those tasks to, and we function much more smoothly.
