Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bryson White . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Bryson thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I have been very fortunate to be able to earn a living solely from performing music for a little over a year and half. That said, I also am a real estate agent so while I could solely do music, it is nice to have another profession that provides me income that I can use towards things like recording, new equipment, and for date nights with my wife! Plus it is one that does not interfere with my pursuit of music. Now in regards to music, by no means did that happen over night. About 3 years ago I decided to pursue music as a career, despite the fact I had never even performed in front of anyone. I would say the first 50 gigs were accompanied by extreme nerves but I knew if I pushed through I could unlock my potential. There’s potential inside of all of us just waiting to be explored, regardless of the pursuit. Getting past fear is a step to any creative endeavor but then there is the more business related stress. Constant emails, messages, calls, dealing with different booking agencies, figuring out how to negotiate your worth, etc… And it isn’t that I don’t have to do that now but now I don’t spend a ton of time asking or negotiating pay for work. Now the communication is mostly based around scheduling months in advance.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first started playing music when I was about 12 years old. I was lucky to have a best friend who also got a guitar around the same age and through our middle school jam sessions (along with minimal guitar lessons) we both learned how to play rather quickly. I haven’t put the guitar down since. Fast forward about 12 years and that is when I started to pursue music as a career. I first started writing songs in 2019 and then recorded an EP and several singles between 2020 and now. After that first EP, I put more focus on performing and started booking gigs all around Atlanta. One of the biggest steps was booking a few shows at a venue in Nashville called When Pigue’s Fly. It is such a great venue and I’m pumped to be back there in September. It was there I met my current producer, Jonny Lucas. I am recording my newest collection of songs with him at his Nashville studio, Round Corner, in September. The EP will come out in mid-October. This music will show that I have grown as both a songwriter and musician. The lyrics are thoughtful and honest and the music is made to give a vibe of road trip or fall morning. The best music creates a mood and I know for certain I have FINALLY accomplished that with this new music. I am truly confident that people will enjoy my new music as it is like nothing I have released before.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding thing about being an musician is when people come up at the end of a show and say “thank you” or “we had a great time”. That says so much more than something like “you have a nice voice”. I deeply love music and the process of writing and crafting a song but in the end, songs aren’t anything if they’re not listened to. So getting to perform my music and see that it affects people is without question the best part of being an artist.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
More recently I have had to pivot from playing as many gigs as possible to taking time away to actually write quality music. I noticed that when I played shows/gigs 5 times a week, I got stuck in the same pattern. I would play the same songs and really got away from writing my own songs. After I got married in June I started thinking deeply about what I wanted to do with music. I sort of “re-realized” that if I don’t spend hours writing my own music every single day, I’ll never play beyond the small local shows. Fortunately, I closed several real estate deals and I had the ability to take time away from gigging, and decided to put that time into writing instead. This is what led to the new EP that will be out in October this year. The crazy part is I wrote all of the songs within about a 2 week period and now am polishing up the details before I record in September.
