We were lucky to catch up with Bryson JonSteele recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bryson, appreciate you joining us today. Do you have an agent or someone (or a team) that helps you secure opportunities and compensation for your creative work? How did you meet you, why did you decide to work with them, why do you think they decided to work with you?
I signed with a LA Mgr when I was 5 yrs old. She had found a runway youtube video of me and reached out to my parents to see if I had ever acted or desired to.. I traveled within 2 mths to Burbank, Ca and met her in person. We had a journey of 5 years together. She introduced me to 3 different LA agencies in which I chose CESD to represent me. I decided to work with them as my parents were allowed to accompany me in the business meeting with the VP of the theatrical division, Pedro Tapia. We all took a few days to discuss which of the 3 meetings felt best and we all agreed that CESD was the right choice for me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Bryson JonSteele. I am 12 years old and I am a child actor. I began modeling runways with names such as Tommy Hilfiger, Abercrombie Kids, and Calvin Klein. At age 4, I worked on my 1st Disney Commercial. By age 5, I became the Florida OJ kid and received my 1st film callback with Stephen Spielberg. My parents then knew it was time to get serious. I began acting classes, found a local agency, and signed with a LA Mgr. Within weeks, I was flying in and out, at an hours notice to LA and by age 6, became SAG eligible. With almost 50 imdb credited films and many local and national commercials, the film industry has been as passionate to me as my faith and family. I simply love it!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One time I was asked to do a film that had very sensitive content. I was only 7 years old and the film was to be about the sensitive subject of a school shooting. I talked with my parents and really wanted to do the film to tell the story and hopefully give parents insight of how their quality time and conversation with their kids really can influence theur future choices. I knew a tragedy like this had never occurred in my own family or life but if it helped save another, I knew it needed to be told. At the film festival it premiered in, the director did not attend. I was a bit torn as to why he would not support a film he had worked so very hard on. Later, i found out, it was partially based on his own, personal story. He had a really tough childhood, and making the film was as far as he could go, but attending the premiere, facing viewers’ criticism, or having to explain why he chose to create the film, was a step he wasn’t comfortable taking just yet. I realized then, I need to respect others stories but by knowing this, it helped me level up my acting skill to tell these stories and give them the organic background they deserve. Whether they’re based on truth or not, this was a lesson I’ve never forgotten.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative artist is the ability to express. I get to wake up every day and create something new. I can be in a fantasy world, a horror, a Christian based family role, or be full of tears overcoming a life-threatening illness. Meeting other creative talent that enjoy film and television is where I learn so many hands-on lessons. Lighting, frames, audio, and special effects, there’s always something new on every single set that leaves me mesmerized and thirsty for more. I feel the reward is definitely in the journey from start to finish in every project!
