Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Bryson Howard . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Bryson , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned my skills at a fairly young age. My grandfather was the worship leader in the church I grew up in, so he was always pushing me to sing. I’m glad he did, it helped me a lot with being on stage and singing in front of a crowd. I started learning guitar when I was around 11, I took lessons for a bit and learned the basics chords. I then decided I wanted to quit lessons and I started teaching myself. I then learned that the most essential skill with learning guitar was patience, and I didn’t have any. Patience was one of my biggest obstacle, and guitar took time and lots of practice. At times I felt like I wasn’t progressing even after the hours of practice. I did the only thing you can do, I kept practicing and pushing myself to become better.
Bryson , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Bryson Howard, I’m a Red Dirt country singer/songwriter based out of Guys, TN. If you don’t know what Red Dirt is, it’s kind of a blend of country and rock. I grew up singing and playing guitar. I’ve been around music my entire life, my grandfather was the worship leader in the church I grew up in, so I was singing in church at a very young age. I’ve been playing guitar since I was 11, I started out taking lessons and learned the basics and then decided I wanted to teach myself. I’ve been writing and doing music professionally for around 4 years now. I started out doing small acoustic gigs in bars and restaurants. I then decided to release my first song, Cold Hearted Cowboy, back in 2021. It took off from there and it made want to pursue a career in music. It took me a while to really figure out what genre I fit into, I knew it was Country but it wasn’t the standard Country most people are used too. Most people have said I have a very distinct sound that separates me from similar artist. I created my sound by taking influence from a multitude of artist and genres, some Country and some not Country. Some of my biggest influences include, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Charlie Robison, Koe Wetzel, Zach Bryan and some other various Country and Texas Country artist. Some of the non-Country artists include, Staind, Nirvana, Austin Meade, and other various Grunge and Rock bands. I’m very proud of the sound and style I have created with my music and I feel like it sets me apart from other artist. My goal is to inspire other artist/musicians and help them realize they can mix whatever genre they want, they don’t have to stick with one and go with it.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Social media is a very powerful thing, it has created and found new talent all over. It’s a good place to start with trying to get yourself out there. It’s also a good source to meet similar artist or meet people that can help you out. One of my most popular songs, Cold Hearted Cowboy, actually got as popular as it did because of social media. Building a social media audience can be difficult and take a while but don’t let that stop you. The best way to start is figuring out the audience you will be aiming for, then post consistently, whether that be your online music, short videos of you playing live, photographs, etc. and most of the time your audience will find you.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
To me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is seeing people listening and enjoying my music as much as I do. Another rewarding aspect is releasing music that people can connect with. It makes me feel like I am doing something right when fans message me saying they connected with my music. I’m very thankful for every listener, follower, and fan I have, their support helps me out and makes me want to create and better my music.
