We were lucky to catch up with Bryhana Chrystina recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Bryhana, thanks for joining us today. So, let’s imagine that you were advising someone who wanted to start something similar to you and they asked you what you would do differently in the startup-process knowing what you know now. How would you respond?
If I were to start over, the one thing I would change would have to be the lack of confidence I had in myself. Sometimes we unknowingly compare ourselves to others. Which was one thing that I let get in the way of myself. I would sit and overthink about a look I was doing, either on myself or someone else and get worked up about how I was going to execute it using the exact same techniques or thought process as my peers or idols. It doesn’t work that way. You have to find what works for you and have the confidence to continue working on your craft and put you’re work out there no matter the result. Especially because we are constantly growing and evolving. Sometimes what you consider “not your best work” is what inspires the next person to get out of the spot they are stuck in and create.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m a Freelance Makeup Artist with about 5 years of experience in the beauty industry. I started my makeup journey after graduating from Triccoci University of Beauty Culture in Highland, Indiana with the help of my uncle Emmanuel Roldan, who has been in the beauty world for 20+ years and has been one of the biggest inspirations for me since. When I was younger, he would come to visit and teach me all about makeup in terms of how to use it, the different products there were, and even set me up with my own brushes and kit. After graduating from esthetics, he brought me to South Florida to get my career started. Since then I’ve worked with a couple beauty brands as well as become a full-time freelance artist. It honestly has been such a blessing and interesting experience seeing myself grow over the years and to now be doing what I love most, all the time, is exciting.
I’ve recently expanded into the production world as a makeup artist, which has been something I am really proud of and looking forward to continuing. It’s a really cool experience being able to see how things come together, and being a part of the process is definitely something that excites me. I am my happiest when I am able to be creative and work with a team to bring a vision or idea to life. This is a new chapter for me, so I am looking forward to the future of bringing on new clients, expanding my business further, and continuing to be as creative as possible while doing so.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Like so many others, I don’t come from a wealthy or successful background. My family has always struggled to stay afloat and lived paycheck to paycheck. My mom was a single mother raising three kids on her own. We didn’t always have the newest, nicest things but she always found a way to make sure we had a roof over our heads and food to eat. Even if it meant her going without. One of the most important reasons driving me to continue on my journey to success, is being able to provide a better life for my future children and give back to my family for all the sacrifice and trying times they endured helping to raise the bunch of us. Besides the fact that I absolutely love being an artist that gets to express herself through a form of art, this is a big part of the reason I am building my business and pushing myself everyday to continue growing.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Someone or a group of people resonating with or being inspired by your work. To me, this is one of the most exciting rewards. Working so hard to really bring your ideas to life and having people say such positive things about your art is fulfilling. Especially. for me. when its other creatives. We all have so many different perspectives, so when another artist comes to me and explains how much they loved the way I used this particular color, or technique, or how it inspired them, it truly gives me the feeling of “Wow, this is what I was meant to do. This is my purpose.”
