We were lucky to catch up with Brycen Zolnick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Brycen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
I couldn’t be happier! I’ve found a love for DJing and performing that compares to nothing else. Aside from that somewhat obvious answer, the thing I love most about it is the ability to change and adapt what I’m doing. If I see something new I can do in my performing or in how I’m running the business I can implement them when and how I want. One of the most frustrating things from the regular job was never having the freedom to make these kings of changes.
Brycen, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I fell into this career by complete accident. I moved from Colorado to Arizona to attend ASU and during my first summer here I stumbled upon the chance to DJ through a rather sketchy internet ad. Luckily it turned out to be legitimate and I worked with this company DJing weddings while attending school. During the pandemic I saw the opportunity to branch off and start my own thing, so I rolled the dice on myself and started my Djing business.
This has become my full time career and I couldn’t picture doing anything else. Weddings continue to be a staple and my goal is to deliver the elegant moments perfectly then follow it up with an insane dance party. I have a great love for house music and have allowed that to influence my performances. This has enabled me to position myself in a unique spot in the wedding industry, offering a more club style reception while breaking away from more traditional wedding music.
House music has become one my greatest passions and is where I envision my career going in the long term. Until then I’ll continue to push the limit in the wedding scene and will always keep a foot in this door.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I think the story of my resilience goes back to a couple of years before I ever considered moving to Arizona and it begins with my dad. I always aspired to be more than what I was in Colorado and I often told him how I didn’t know what it was going to be, but I knew I was going to be ready when the opportunity came. Sometimes he didn’t have a lot to say but he always told me how much he believed in me.
In the summer of 2016 my father passed away from a traumatic brain injury he sustained in a bicycle accident. After losing my dad I found a new drive to find this opportunity and explored as many avenues as I could. This eventually led to my decision to relocate to Arizona and subsequently to begin this career in DJing. There have been many stressful days and sleepless nights but this belief my dad had in me has always been a source of inspiration. When a lot of people see me they see someone who dropped out of college and abandoned what they used to stand for, but I know my dad would see someone who took the time to learn their craft and their business and did everything in their power to make it work.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to simply give people the best time of their lives. Some of my favorite memories are the dance floors in front of amazing DJ’s, and I’ve seen people react to me the way I reacted to those DJ’s. The opportunity to give that experience to others fuels my drive to hone my craft and find the new limits to push.
