We were lucky to catch up with Bryce Pinchum recently and have shared our conversation below.
Bryce, appreciate you joining us today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I started singing at church in the choir and on the praise team. I would write songs occasionally at home or on my way to school but for a long time, I didn’t do anything with my music. I was at a place in my life where I knew I wanted to earn a living as a vocalist, but I didn’t think it was really possible.
I believe starting sooner would have given me a huge advantage in my career as an artist. Ed Sheran said in an interview once that if you want to be a professional entertainer, you have to get in you 1,000 hours. Meaning, you have to have 1,000 hours of experience. That means booking shows and performing for small or non-existent audiences. Or it could mean performing outside in the elements. Either way, I think had I started taking myself and my art seriously at an earlier age, I would have started making my way to those 1,000 hours a lot sooner. The more experience, the better at my craft I would be.
Starting sooner for me would have caused me to develop confidence sooner. I would have developed more of a fan base as well. Singing in church and doing background vocals for artists over the years has definitely gotten me some recognition but I’m sure it would be on a much larger scale had I started sooner.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Born and raised on the east side of the “Motor City”, actor and singer-songwriter Bryce Pinchum’s love for music sparked at age 3, in the place that it does for many African American singers, church. His affinity for song became evident in the enthusiasm with which he’d belt out songs that were taught in Sunday School; songs about faith, unconditional love, and stories from the Bible. As Bryce grew older, he would listen to artists such as CeCe Winans and Fred Hammond while riding in the car with his mother. A devout Christian woman, she forbade her son to listen to other genres of music. This only piqued Bryce’s curiosity of secular music, prompting him to secretly explore the music of Michael Jackson, Kenny Lattimore, Manhattan Transfer, and many others. It was there in those hidden moments that a world of music far beyond gospel was discovered and a young man from Detroit began to dream.
Bryce began writing songs at age 9, but his first real glimpse of the life that he’d begun to dream about came while a student at Cass Technical High School. As a vocal major and member of the choir, he enjoyed opportunities to sing background vocals for Patti Labelle, Aretha Franklin, Yolanda Adams, and countless others. From those moments, Bryce envisioned himself touring as a background vocalist with some of the world’s greatest artists. He then began to position himself to achieve his goals, training classically as a Tenor I and traveling across the country in pursuit of the tools to perfect his craft; attending workshops for singers, songwriters, and actors with the ultimate goal of networking with like-minded artists and improving his skill set.
Bryce’s notable accomplishments include work as a background vocalist for Drake and Kanye West.
Bryce continues to pursue his aspirations of becoming a household name as a singer-songwriter and actor. In addition to his music and acting ventures, he has a mission to shine a positive light on African American males by bringing global attention to their triumphs and celebrating their successes.
“This may be the first time that you’ve heard my voice or seen my face, but I guarantee it won’t be the last.”
I want my fans to know that the music I create is feel good music.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I’m still working on my social media presence but 1 thing that I love to do, and my followers really enjoy, is my parody and spoof songs and videos. I’ll take a well known song and change all the lyrics and make the song about an entirely different subject. I love Saturday Night Live and comedy in general so these videos are my attempt to be like all the comedians out there that I love.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want BRYCE LP to be a household name. I want my lyrics and melodies to affect people all over the world for generations to come. I want people to feel love when they listen to my music. And for them to know that wherever they are and whatever they are struggling with, it’s ok. You don’t have to try to fix yourself to fit a narrative or standard of another person because you are perfect, as is.
