We were lucky to catch up with Bryan Ribeiro recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Bryan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is the current film festival I launched- the Mount Vernon Film Festival.
It’s a massive undertaking and the quintessential passion project- all love, very little return, and headed by a group of eager friends and professionals. Speaking honestly, the festival is all in the spirit of celebrating storytelling. I wanted to particularly shine a light on narrative filmmaking and its possibilities in the Mount Vernon, lower New York state, area. Though the event hasn’t passed yet, I can feel the responsibility of assembling such an event bearing as more and more get excited about the possibility.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always loved filmmaking. I’m a fan of storytelling in general but telling a narrative in film form is a combination of sights and sounds that hits the viewer in a way no other medium can. I got into the industry to tell stories but my actual job involves just the editing aspect of it. So, as a way to find my footing in the film and storytelling industry, I work as a professional video editor. In terms of clients, I’ve freelanced for Macy’s, Viacom, NFL, Disney Streaming, and local production houses and agencies. All the while, I’ve been personally producing my own narrative work, while meeting other filmmakers and learning the tools of the trade.
I think what sets me apart is the adaptability needed in the freelance roles I’ve done. It’s a requirement necessary for my freelance lifestyle. It’s a large test of mettle and pivoting ability but it lends itself to a challenge I very much enjoy. A lot of my clients like the ability to stretch and commute between different styles of video editing.
From all this all this, besides this upcoming film festival, all these threads of skills, communication, work experience, all lead to a several few proud achievements. Those achievements being films I wrote, directed, and, almost most importantly, edited. Each film is very important to me and helps to expand my knowledge in the ever expanding world of storytelling.

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
There are so many resources of information. I think its almost impossible to find one that’s significantly impressed upon me the level that I think this question demands. I love books, video essays, and other places of informations- even Masterclasses are inspirational. But the only way to be a filmmaker is to make films. There are just no two ways about it. You have to get boots on the ground and learn through trial by fire. Seeing films is also a great exercise in manifesting and understanding the filmmaking form. Especially behind the scenes of your favorite films. Youtube is a fountain of knowledge in this case. There are also classics for free on things like Tubi. Just do a bit of research and you’ll be ahead of the game.
But a few of my favorites video essayist YouTubers include A Closer Look, Film Riot, kaptainkristian, Now You See It, Hello Future Me, Lessons from the Screenplay, and Every Frame A Painting.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
There was always one goal. To create and make films in the bigger wider Hollywood circle. The chance to tell or be a part of creating stories for folks to enjoy was always very exhilarating. Whether as an editor or director or something in-between, it’s that chase to get a feeling. It’s very difficult to get an audience to empathize. But when the collective feels for a character, laughs, cries- there’s no better sense of self.
Until now, there’s been only one goal. Now there’s a second. The Mount Vernon Film Festival I’m launching. Getting the filmmakers in the wider area, connecting younger filmmakers with other and older talents, trying to represent Mount Vernon as a destination locale for artists, and inspiring en masse. Instead of having my film potentially touch others, I can try and help facilitate that feeling to a lot more people with different ideas. The whole concept is very exciting to me- and that’s a good sign.
