Alright, Bryan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?

I think that to really build something successful, you have to be genuinely interested in what you’re doing. I’ve been able to make a career from a childhood interest, and if I were to attribute any one factor in that unlikely story, it would be that the subject of our work and general interest are the same. That’s been a driving force that’s kept me going though all the hard parts, the boring parts, and just excited about the fact that every day, I get to get up and and work on something that a 10-year-old version of me would be incredibly happy about.

I can’t say I would have been able to do this if the subject were different. Obviously, not everyone’s going to care about the same things – but I truly believe that anyone could make a living doing what they love to do by taking that risk and letting that natural drive work through. The other things fall into place – it’s just math and finding the formula to find what others might benefit from in the thing know the best.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers

I started Rattlesnake Solutions during the recession in 2009 after being laid off from my job as an Art Director as a way to keep the lights on, in an “all skills on deck” situation. I quickly learned that the knowledge of how to find and safely relocate rattlesnakes is a very essential service in Arizona and that I might have the ability to actually make a business from it. I consider the 20 years I spent in the world of design, marketing, and business-building training.

We work with snakes, but our core service is this: alleviating fear.

As a conservation business, it’s become clear that the best way to help the animals is to help the people who come into conflict with them. Ultimately using our services to remove unwanted rattlesnakes from homes and businesses provides a platform to educate, work on sustainable, preventative solutions, and collect real-world data that gives a much broader look at the problem. I’m immensely proud that for as vital as our services are, what we are best known for is high-quality information.

Has your business ever had a near-death moment? Would you mind sharing the story?

When I stepped away from my 20 year career to work on my little side-business full time, we were simply not prepared for the growth. Sales revenue tripled in the first year, and doubled again after that. Along the way, there were numerous instances where the business “grew up”, going from 1 employee and a handful of part-time contractors to a full-time team of more than 20 individuals across 3 cities. We never exactly almost went under, but there were periods where I had misunderstood some vital part of accounting or business insurance, and I didn’t take a paycheck for a few months. Those moments were scary – is this unique business really viable? In the end, yes it is, and doing great now … but the ride up was as bumpy as flying out of Denver.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.

We are constantly providing education and information about our area of study – rattlesnakes. It’s basically our entirely marketing plan: talk about what we know and care about, conduct research, provide data to universities, host dozens of free presentations each year, and much more. This is what we love to do, and it ends up working best for us, and everyone else, to just run with that and constantly talk about it all.
