We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Bryan Blair a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Bryan, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
My mentor always told me, “if it feels scary to jump, that’s exactly when you jump. Otherwise you stay in the same place for the rest of you life.” I took the risk to leave my hometown in San Francisco to move to Arizona and start a new journey in life. My first risk started when I decided to drop out of my university. I had a dream to pursue visual arts full time, and I never was really content with where the traditional school system was taking me. I always wanted more in life, but being able to take the risk to try something new and different is what stifles most people.
As soon as I dropped out of school, I felt a sense of relief and ambition overwhelm me. I knew I made the right decision. Every day going forward was devoted to perfecting my craft in visual arts and building my client base.
Fast-forward 4 years later, I am now living full time in Phoenix Arizona, growing a multi-milliondollar digital marketing company with my business partner, and living my life to the fullest it can be. It is only the beginning, but it all started with taking the risk that most people won’t.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Bryan and I am a Creative Director and Entrepreneur specializing in cinematography and visual aid. I picked up the camera for the first time in 2016 and ever since then, creative media has been a part of me. My company solves the problem of low-quality visuals by providing unparalleled stunning visual content, with relationships that last a lifetime. We value every client we work with, and in most companies today, that is the key element that is missing. We strive hard to serve others and help their business become successful, because we know that by serving others first, the blessing will always come back around.
Personally I strive to be the best I can be everyday, and even tho we all fall short and have seasons of no movement, the overall trajectory is always going up. I stay disciplined by keeping God first everyday, in addition, filling my mind with knowledge from other successful entrepreneurs in the industry. I then implement my own unique workflow that works for me, one that allows me to stay healthy, happy, and active. I believe that if you don’t take care of your mental health first, then nothing else will work properly, including business.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The main lesson I had to unlearn was the ’employee mindset.’ Traditional school will teach us to think how we are told, and that our abilities are measured in letters and numbers. NOT TRUE! The most creative and intelligent people were never understood by the majority, but they were the people that pushed our modern innovation to the next level. By unlearning the ’employee’ mindset, you start to realize that you are not hindered by what others tell you, your brain starts to think outside the box and create! Everything in our modern-day society was a creative and useful thought at first, then backed by action, execution, and eventually perfected into the norms we know today. I believe that if you learn how to think for yourself and not let others tell you how to live your life, then your life get ten times better! You feel free, free to create the lifestyle you want. My mentor also told me to “learn to be the CEO of your life vs. the employee of your life.”
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Referrals. It’s that simple. If you do good work, and grow the relationship with your clients, then you will have no problem scaling a business if you stay patient. The best way to grow your business is to use the business you already have. Tell your clients you appreciate them, check in on them, and let them know that if they take care of you then you will take care of them. People love relating to other people and growing a lifelong relationship.
