We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brunno Kawagoe a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Brunno, thanks for joining us today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
Yeah, I’ve always tried to find a new objective as soon as I reached a goal. Knowing where to go has always guided me, and I’ve always moved in the direction where creativity and enthusiasm show up—it was like a radar.
At first, I was shooting portrait photography in my hometown in Brazil. Then I realized there was a growing market, so I started photographing events and music festivals, and my career expanded to cities nearby. After covering all the major festivals in Brazil, like Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza, Universo Paralello, and others, I moved to São Paulo and began working with publicity and brands. São Paulo is the place where things happen for most of us in the audiovisual world, and now, after exploring different areas, people are starting to notice my creative vision. I’ve been working on projects that align more closely with my personality and beliefs, moving toward my artistic interests, creating, innovating, and always wanting to change myself and the world around me. Now, I feel drawn to live more quietly or perhaps in another country, and I know my career will make that happen, as it has since day one. <3 A good milestone is to listen to your heart and follow the flow it reveals. Moving toward your truth brings the right people and experiences into your life, making it easier to live fully through your creative work, balancing earnings with the creator’s hunger to create.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
For those who may not be familiar with my work, I’ve had a creative journey driven by a deep desire to constantly evolve and connect with new ideas. I’m originally from Brazil, where I started in photography by shooting portraits in my hometown. When I recognized the growing demand, I quickly expanded into event and music festival photography, covering major events like Rock in Rio, Lollapalooza, and Universo Paralello and others. This exposure helped me grow my career beyond local boundaries, eventually leading me to São Paulo, where I began collaborating with brands in the world of advertising and commercial media like Adidas, Coca-Cola, Jeep, SPFW, Vogue, Tik Tok, Shutterstock, Patreon, Meta/Facebook, 212 Carolina Herrera, Hering, Johnnie Walker, Stella Artois.
In my work now, I direct, film, photograph, and animate projects, bringing a strong personal and creative vision to each project. Over time, people have begun seeking me out for my unique perspective, which allows me to take on projects that align closely with my personality and beliefs. This shift has allowed me to focus on work that resonates with my artistic interests and challenges me to innovate continuously.
I’ve also been creating content on Instagram, my goal is to help others find that spark of creativity and elevate their work through video and photography.
What sets me apart is my commitment to constantly changing and pushing my boundaries. I’m always seeking ways to challenge both myself and the world around me, aiming to create something that feels fresh and alive. I’m most proud of the way my career has unfolded so organically, allowing me to connect authentically with people and create work that has meaning.
For anyone considering my work, be sure to see my work and see what emerges from it, i’ve create a lot of thing in many areas, making me a multi artist creator.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think it’s the free time to appreciate life, and seeing life as an artist is amazing—to see each opportunity as a chance to create and build worlds from it.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal now is to work worldwide, traveling and meeting other artists, creating with this energy and connecting it to the spirituality I’ve been exploring.
