We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brune Macary a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brune thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
In the past year I have released 5 new singles and 3 music videos. I have been able to open up a new door to my creative work by writing and singing electro-pop music. Shooting music videos were definitely a highlight that I did not expect to enjoy so much. I have realized I love working with cameras. I love creating a look (makeup and wardrobe), and defining a character. There is nothing more satisfying than being able to translate the mood of a song into a visual story.
My favorite music video I have shot is “Tides”. We shot it in the Great Sand Dunes National Park (most epic landscape) with a team of 9 people. It was the biggest shoot I had ever done, and it even included dancers.
I used to do a lot of theater in my youth. I was hoping to get a double degree in acting and music for my Bachelor’s degree but realized it would be too costly to stay another year so I ended up doing a music degree in violin performance instead.
Making music videos tie in my 2 passions, music and “acting”.

Brune, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a classically trained violinist born in Paris. I attended a french conservatory all throughout high school then moved to the United-States when I was 18 years old. (to follow a French teacher teaching in Wisconsin) I thought I would only stay for my degree, but after getting a Bachelor’s degree in music performance, I ended up staying in the US, and getting 2 other Master’s degrees in music as well.
In the past year, I have rediscovered writing pop music. I have teamed up with 3 different music producers, (friends and my brother) to release singles.
My music explores a lot of different musical genres, from dream pop, electro pop, EDM, house…
As a solo female artist, I love to collaborate with other musicians to get new influences and the best finished product.
Some of my singles incorporate French lyrics and violin melodic lines.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a performer is such a rewarding career. There is no better feeling than the flow state of a live performance. You also get immediate feedback from the audience. I love to share an emotional experience, I really like taking the audience on a journey into their hearts and opening it up. One member of the audience said after our last fundraising event for Ukraine “Listening to such beautiful music, I feel like humanity has been redeemed for a little bit”
Playing has a real impact on your audience. You move people, you make them cry or dance, you lift up their spirit.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I used to be extremely competitive. I was striving to be the best. I thought I had to be the best musician to stand out, and so I was constantly competing. I found out the hard way that I was not meant to be the best classical violinist (relief!). I got several injuries from over use, practicing my instrument so many hours a day. For a while I lost my way, music did not have the right meaning anymore and it did not have the joy it should have… I did not even know why I was playing music anymore.
But I came back, I got into baroque violin and writing pop music at about the same time. I realized there is room for everyone, as long as you pick the right music for you! Instead of competing you collaborate, you share ideas and interpretations. What I love the most is a combination of arts, music, acting, dancing etc!
